IB Preparation?

Hello IBSurvival!

I just registered and i'm already really into the site :D, I'll be starting the DP in september, but have not taken the MYP.

I'll be changing schools, and my old school had  IGCSE's but i only took math, english as a second language, and computer science. I got an A* in computer science, which i did in grade 9, and haven't received my grade for the other two yet (but i'm pretty sure i got A* for math and A*/A for english.

I'll be taking Math HL Chemistry HL Physics HL English A SL Arabic B SL Economics SL (Most Likely, not really into Psychology or History, which are the other options at my new school). I'm pretty good at math and the sciences, but my english is a bit rusty as my old school rarely focused on writing essays, and it was only memorizing vocab and grammar rules.

Is there any way i can start preparing for IB from early on? What books could I buy from now so that I could read through the material i'll be covering at IB? Also, how will I be reporting my hours for CAS? I heard about ManageBac, and my new school uses it, but will i be able to start from now, even before school?

Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance :D

Hey,

first of all, for the sciences there is are new syllabi for the may 2016 candidates so you'll have to look for books that contain These. I know only about a few textbooks that have already been released (like the ones from Oxford and from Cambridge), because most of them will probably be folllowing in August.

But if you want to have an overview over the subjects you can always look up the syllabi.

I don't know about the other subjects though, because I don't take them ...

Regarding CAS, you have to contact your IB coordinator to find out if your School accepts CAS hours even if you haven't started your Diploma yet. Even if that's not the case, it's still good to start looking out for CAS Projects.

Hope this helps you

You cannot start your CAS projects until you have started your IB course, which is until your Day 1 at school. But I suggest, you plan out your CAS Projects in advance, so you can get started as soon as you start school. And since the First year of IB will be hectic, planning out your projects in advance will definitely help you out as planning them out later on will be time consuming and you will not have time for that. Also, you will have to inform your CAS coordinator (if you have one) about all the CAS activities you are doing, as they must be recorded with supervision.

I see, that you are a VIP Subscriber at IBS, so i suggest you to take a look at the Files & Notes section, and take a look at the latest notes for your subjects. The syllabi is pretty much the same, but there are few changes with the HL & SL syllabi, so take a look at both. Take tuitions if you want, for Math and Physics HL.

I'd be glad to answer any other questions :)

I noticed you mentioned that you are "rusty" in your English. You should probably start brushing up already: A good command of academic English is essential for all your courses.

If you are thinking of taking English B or A2 (Lang/lit) or even A1 (Lit ) then there is more to these than just  studying grammar or vocabulary -- English B, A2 and A1 are all about discourse and literacy, rather than learning individual words and de-contextualisd grammar. You'll need to be well-prepared for these courses. Which English A are you planning to take anyway? A1 (Lit) or A2 (lang Lit)?

I can suggest things for you already, but as rashi mentions, you can get a glimpse of some things just by checking out our files. You may want more, though. I'll see if I can help get your started at least.

I'm not sure how you're IB school is but classes like those are pure suicidal. That'll stack up to about 10 hours of homework every night at my school. As far as English goes, the only thing I could say is working on spelling, grammar, and writing.

Best thing would probably be to contact your new school to ask them what books they will be using and to either buy the books beforehand and start reading, or to borrow the books from the school if they let you do that.

As english you say is 'rusty', then you can look up past papers (Look at Paper 1, not paper 2 as it would make no sense). Read novels, and possibly even ask the school about which english novels you will study so that you can read those.

For managebac, you would need a login which you won't have, plus you won't be able to log any hours until IB has begun, so why not think abut the different activities you want to do, the CAS project and all that. You don't want to be overloaded with CAS, but I suggest that you get most of it out of the way in IB year1 as IB year 2 is hectic.

However, don't stress about IB already. If anything, buy the stationary and exercise books and be prepared that way as well.
