Hi I'm wondering how specific does an IOP topic have to be. I'm currently thinking about doing the text 'Like Water for Chocolate' and doing something with feminism. I'm thinking of just focusing feminism on the character Tita. Is this topic too unspecific? Do I have to narrow that down to a way she shows feminism (food, interaction with other characters)?

Honestly, the IOP is the most free form of any of the exams in English, and arguably in any class. You have all the power to decide how specific you want to be.

That being said, so long as you are still within the time constraints, the more specific you are, the more likely you are to do well, in my opinion and based on what the IB usually seems to appreciate. By no means does that mean being vague means you'll do badly. If you do well with your topic, you'll do well. Besides, Criterion A is the only that even refers to content. The other two are about presentation skills.

My IOP (last yr), was also on the book Like Water For Chocolate. I think you definitely need to be more specific than that. So in your topic do specify the techniques you want to focus on as you have mentioned.

I think that its good that you have narrowed it down to 1 character, Tita and a theme - feminism.

However, once you start thinking about your topic you might find that for example Mama Elena or gertruda (i think that was her name) also have links to feminism and that might be a good way of talking about how Esquivel has contrasted the way she depicts feminism through different characters.

Also it might be interesting to ask yourself - what is it about feminism that you want to talk about - be clear about your definition of feminism and make sure that if you state that you are talking about feminism, that you dont go off on a tangent about something that doesnt actually fit in with feminism.

What I am wondering is whether gender role reversals are something you will talk about.

PS - Are you from Adelaide, if so you might be from GIHS and I might actually know you! Good Luck!

Hi!

I think that either topic is fine! There are essentially both the same except that the first topic is more specific (you have locked 2 characters in) whereas the second one is a little more broad.

Also, you can refine your topic as you write your IOP so don't stress about getting it right the first time anyway.

I think you have a good topic there. There is a lot to say about the role reversals between Pedro and Tita.

Good Luck. I hope you do well.
