Tien Pham
Hi guys, I am currently working on my TOK presentation and I really need your help. My knowledge issue or now called knowledge question is: PREJUDICE OFTEN CLOUDS OUR JUDGEMENT, TO WHAT EXTENT DOES RACISM AFFECT OUR EMOTION AND REASON? Is this a good knowledge question? Also I wanted to ask about the structure. I would you two real life situation such as the recent Ferguson shooting and one other situation, where prejudice has negatively affected actions of an individual. Do you think that this is a good start? I would really appreciate your opinion on this and a possible feedback. Thanks Reply
Sandwich
TO WHAT EXTENT DOES RACISM AFFECT OUR EMOTION AND REASON? Okay so in TOK emotion and reason are ways of knowing. They are ways in which we acquire knowledge, not areas of knowledge. You can't have racism affecting our emotion - emotion, reason, sense/perception and language are the ways in which we 'know' about and can be racist. Not the other way round. The origins of racism lie in those things, rather than racism being some abstract 5th way of knowledge that we can use to inform our emotions. Emotions contribute to our racism rather than the other way around. It's kind of a chicken and egg thing. The emotion comes first, the racism comes second. All the ways of knowing have to come before knowledge, that's one of the fundamental principles of the IB's TOK diagram. 1 Reply
