Can I change HL to SL on second year of study.

From my experience, it is usually possible to drop from HL to SL so long as you haven't signed up for your exams yet. The only problem is if there is a scheduling problem, but that is a question for a school counselor. As for changing bio from SL to HL, that will likely be much harder. I know that it isn't allowed at my school. You need to spend 3 semesters in a class, so I think that starting it in 2nd year will be too late for you. Of course, bring it up with your IB coordinator, but expect a no.

I had the same problem, but the first year of my Diploma. I had HL history and wanted to drop to SL and do Bio HL instead of SL: It was really hard to persuade my coordinator, and we were like in the second month of school. He told me that if the Bio teacher accepted me there was no problem. I had to study a little bit and present a lab report and a few homework. I think that they will tell you no. You could do it if you are a genius in biology if not I wouldn´t suggest it. I don´t have art but I think it´s easier from what my friends say. I mean you just have to work hard and give in artwork. In biology what you need is study study study and a VERY good memory. The other thing is that second year is not really a whole year because you spend time giving in IA in all subjects, extended essay...Most of what will come up in the exams you should have covered in first year of diploma. (at least this is how they do it in most IB schools I know)

IB students are signed up for exams somewhere in the middle of their second year of IB (though I'm not exactly sure when) so technically it would be possible to switch subjects after the first year. However, I'm not sure if your IB coordinator would allow it (better ask her/him). If you don't need Biology HL for you further studies he or she may think that there is no reason to switch. Apart from that, I definitely wouldn't recommend switching to Biology HL as it might be very difficult to catch up on work (I'm refering mostly to Biology IA which you would have to write in one year).

Good luck, though.

This kind of a question depends on how subjects are taught at your school, whether you have SL and HL in the same class or separately etc.

At my school, apart from maths, we didn't need to pick which subjects we wanted to do as HL until second year anyway so you could easily move them around up until the end of term 1 in year 2 (we have 4 terms per year).

So it really depends on when you guys start doing the HL stuff and how much of it you have done. If the class has done a lot of biology HL then you are more likely to not be allowed to change. Also, I would recommend against it.

Another thing to keep in mind is whether you have been registered with IB yet or not. By the time you sign the sheet about the subjects you are doing at SL and HL, after that you pretty much cannot change your subjects etc. Before then you technically can but your school may not let you. We can tell you a range of things but in the end it  is the IB co-ordinator that rules what you can and cannot do (after IBO) so why not go and talk to him/her?
