What counts as a WORD? Mathematics Extended Essay Word Count Help

IB .

Recommended Posts

Hello IBers,

I have recently finished my Math EE. However, my word count is over the 4000 word limit. I have found that I used many textboxes so that I can label my screen captures with "Figure x". Also, I used many symbols such as " C1 " (to label the objects in a plane) since my topic is in geometry. I was wondering about what defines a "word" in a maths essay. I have read the  EE guidelines which say that the limit does not include:

· the abstract
· acknowledgements
· the contents pages
· maps, charts, diagrams, annotated illustrations and tables
· the references/bibliography
· appendices
· EQUATIONS, FORMULAS, AND CALCULATIONS

In maths, Cisn't an equation nor is a formula; I have used it to denote an object in a geometric plane. Therefore, does this count in the word count?

Also, I don't see anything about captions/textboxes not being included in the word limit.

Help would be very much appreciated.

the text boxes with "figure x" don't count, it is the body of your essay which counts. If you're annotating your diagrams with C1, as you said you've labelled the objects in a plane, then that shouldn't count either, but if you're using it in your actual essay then it probably does count. I hope this helps :)
