Elaf Taleb
Hello guys! About Math SL exploration, I am quite interested in researching something that has with BMI to do; how it changes over time.. Yeah, but I don't know where to start! Like, I'm seriously LOST. Am I supposed to perform some kind of investigation by hand? Or what?? Reply
Sofia.
What would you investigate with BMI? Simply calculating BMI is too simple for a Math SL IA, and nothing really comes to mind that you could investigate further... If you don't have access to a lot of data, because then you could probably do something statistics-related. The purpose of the Math IA is to investigate a mathematical phenomenon that interests you; that could be optimization, applications of 'e', fibonacci sequences... What is important is that the level of math is appropriate to your course - it would have to be on par with the SL syllabus or above it. 1 Reply

Well, I searched a bit more and I honestly find that the most interesting topic to work with is Bivariate analysis (chapter 10). So I thought that perhaps I could do something with correlation between height and weight and compare that between male and female. I mean, that interests me and it is chapter 10, so it's within the syllabus. And then of course I would gather data, like record the height and weight of my classmates (anonymously) and certainly do something that is statistics-related and find if there is any correlation and how the correlation looks. Because I'm really not looking for anything advanced, just something that I know I can write at least 6 pages about. Please, tell me.. Do you think this was a good idea? And if yes, do you think it's enough to gather data from the people in my class only, or should it be more? Like two classes? And thank you so much for your reply! Sofia.
Bear in mind that I take HL maths and not SL, so this might be off, but I that seems like a Studies topic to me... Most of my classmates in Studies look at the relationship between sleep and grades, eye colour and hair colour, etc etc Sounds a bit like your topic But ask your maths teacher - she/he should know!
