jolthan
Hello all, This is my research question,What are the literary influences on George RR Martin’s fantasy series, A song of Ice and Fire?I've asked my supervisor if this topic would be okay, and he said yes. However, he is relatively new to the IB program and all that he knows about the EE is from the EE guide and from what the coordinator tells him. I've begun writing, mostly comparing Tolkien and Martin, and also acknowledging the historical references in the book. I'm at around 1000 words and I'm stuck. What other suggestions do you have, or is there a way to tweak this research question to be more broad, if themes could be added too, it would be a lot easier. Thank you for taking the time to help me.Sam Edited October 18, 2014 by jolthan Reply
Blackcurrant
You're question is really very broad already (and actually, inappropriate if that is your RQ and not your topic statement). Remember, your RQ must present a valid research question, and an argument. At the moment, your RQ (if that is what it is) is neither. If not, then back to the drawing board, I'm afraid. jolthan
Hi Blackcurrent, seem's like you're always the only one helping me Why isn't my current research question, a research question? If I change it into a statement instead of a question, would it be a valid RQ? RQ: To what extent is George RR Martin’s fantasy series, A song of Ice and Fire influenced by different literary sources? I'm basically looking at other literary works that Martin has cited, looking at these books and comparing. Thanks! Fedoramiaza
If you want to specify you R.Q you could focus on three or less literary devices. I did my E.E on foreshadowing alone. The R.Q would constantly change as you do your E.E, you don't need to worry about it until you have completely completed your E.E. You could also specify what elements would it influence or how it would influence. Check out the R.Qs of past E.Es and compare it to yours. I found the E.Es from the 50 exemplar E.Es published by I.B very useful. All the best! Reply
jolthan
Hello Fedoramiaza, Thank you for your advice, I've tweaked my RQ based on your suggestion: "To what extent is the setting, characterization and __ in George RR Martin’s fantasy series, A song of Ice and Fire, influenced by different literary works" I've yet to decide what the third literary device might be, and I'm open to suggestions Sam Edited October 19, 2014 by jolthan Reply
