kpatel27
Hi guys! I'm starting my Plan of Investigation today... My topic is on WWII and Germany's use of Blitzkrieg or "Lightning War" in other words. I want to investigate its successes and its failures. Does my research question sound good? To what extent was Germany’s Blitzkrieg successful from 1939-1945 during World War I? Reply
alefal
Hey there! I think you should refocus the question a bit. If you think you can discuss 6 years of war history without being general within 6-800 words, you're certainly (overly?) ambitious. In the very least, focus on a much more specific time frame. Perhaps even focus on a particular battle or campaign. The issue you will be facing is the question whether or not there are any historical debates on the topics nowadays. Although my expertise is not in the WW2, I think you'll have difficulties finding (well-)recognised arguments for and against the successfulness of the Blitzkrieg. Please do prove me wrong if you have evidence saying otherwise. The key to HIs and essays in history, is that you need to deal with a (ongoing) debate between historians. There must be historians saying that Germany's Blitzkrieg was unsuccessful, and historians saying it was successful. Have you done any reading on the topic yet? If you haven't, I suggest you do. kpatel27
Sorry for the late reply, but should I talk about a specific year and battle of blitzkrieg? For example, the fall of france in 1940 with Blitzkrieg? Reply
alefal
Honestly speaking, this is something you need to figure out yourself. As long as you are able to cover all aspects of your topic with a good, consistent analysis, all should be good. Personally, I think even limiting it to a specific year is not enough, though reducing the discussion to a specific battle could work. Reply
williamgilbert
I just turned in my final draft for the history IA, here was my RQ: "To what extent did the Cu Chi North Vietnamese tunneling system affect their victory in the Tet Offensive?" I chose a specific incident that the tunnels were used. Reply
kpatel27
Which major battles actually utilized Blitzkrieg though? So far I only know of bulge, stalingrad, france, operation barbarossa, and moscow. I don't know if they all used it for sure, but I believe the online sources I found stated that.
