seeeeahawks
So, I'm in the top band at my school and I play clarinet. Biggest issue here: I can't tongue notes at all. Can anyone help me to figure this out at least somewhat? We have a concert coming up, and my section has to play more staccato than I'd like to think about right now. Eek...help! Mathemagician
Well, I'm also a Clarinet player, and tonguing is pretty straightforward. Whenever you want to tongue a note during playing, which is stopping the airflow into the instrument thus stopping the sound from being produced, all you have to do is literally stick your tongue out and place it between the small area between the reed and the mouthpiece (there will be a small opening here); place the tip of your tongue in this area and hold it there for how long you want to tongue (quick breaths can be taken in this process). And then just remove your tongue, thus allowing the airflow to go back through once again, which will let you produce a sound. seeeeahawks
Thanks...it just seems so much harder than that. Reply
Mathemagician
That's ok- everyone struggles with instruments (doesn't matter which one) at some point. When I first started playing the clarinet, I struggled quite a bit, even with the basic stuff I struggled. However, over time I learned. By the way, what song/songs are you playing? seeeeahawks
We're playing a song called Canonic Fantasy, La Oreja de Oro, Fantasia in G Minor, A Moorside Suite, and a song called Fanfare and Allegro. Yep, full list there, but I like all the songs. Fun stuff.. Reply
