Using an old portfolio task as the topic for my exploration?

Hey guys!

I've just started working on my mathematical exploration - I wrote a plan of my work and outlined what I want to do and in what order. The topic is "Graphical interpretation of the complex roots of quadratic and cubic equations". Besides the fact that I'm concerned about the level of mathematics used (I'm afraid that finding the roots graphically and determining a general solution may not be sophisticated enough), now I'm even more worried: I've found out that something similar to my topic was actually a task for the portfolio a few years ago (namely task "Shadow Functions" from 2012/2013, which you can find here).

It turned out that my plan is quite similar to the task given; do you think that using an old task may somehow influence my potential grade? Should I change the topic..?

If it's really similar then it might be considered as self-plagiarism.. which you obviously don't want. My advice is to ask your teacher on what you can do about it, or change your plan somehow that you're able to get the same results and have the same aim, etc. Hope this helped!
