Djsporting
Hey, I have started the IB in september, and I have a couple of doubts regarding the FOA. Any tips on how to analyze a political cartoon? How do i talk about it for 5- 10mins? Also, should I include the image which I will be analyzing within the presentation? Any other advice/tips would be highly appreciated. Best Regards, and thank you in advance. Edited December 14, 2014 by Djsporting 1 Reply
Sandwich
It seems to me that leaving the cartoon out of your presentation would somewhat hamper the ability of the audience to have any idea what you're talking about They kind of need to know. Otherwise, analysing a political cartoon is very straight forward. If you think about it, people do it automatically every time they open a newspaper with zero effort or training, so really the key is stating the obvious. There are three main aspects to consider - the text within the cartoon (and its implications), the cartoon itself (almost always exaggerated, and its implications) and of course the political context which is fairly key to understanding one of these. Essentially - you know what the message of the cartoon is. Now all you have to do is explain to the audience exactly how you know the message and all the little bits of the cartoon which convey that to you. Go wild - it's not literature so there are no boundaries to the things you can say. Everything from the font to the colours to the facial expressions is fair game because it's all part of how the message is conveyed to the simple newspaper reader 1 Reply
