bgmkcr
Hello dear friends;I'm so confused about maths. Honestly, I'm not good at maths, I don't love it tho. I want to be an editor/journalist/director in the future. I'll choose one of them soon but what should I do with maths? My teacher said you can take Maths HL because your all friends will take Maths HL. HELP ME PLEASE!!! Reply
maturk
Hello I must say the mathematics at the higher level is a very rigorous course that requires a lot of hard work and dedication. It is by no means a "soft" IB subject; in fact, it has been said to be one of the hardest, if not the hardest subject in the IB. I'm currently taking math HL and I am struggling quite a bit. It really isn't the content that is difficult, instead it is the questions that are asked in IB papers. Very tricky questions! With that being said, if you like math and don't mind doing an hour or so each night, then go ahead and take it at the HL. It is a really rewarding class to the extent of the joy and satisfaction gained from solving difficult problems. This of course applies to mathematics SL too. SL is also a demanding course that will require you to really put some effort into understanding the content that is required for you to learn. The syllabus coverage is on par with HL mathematics; however, luckily the questions asked are more basic compared to most of the HL questions. Just as a personal opinion, and of coarse something you do not have to agree with, it seems that your editorial/journalism ambitions do not require an extremely high level of mathematics. So, I think SL might be a good choice for you. On the other hand, you could always try out mathematics HL for half a year (or longer/shorter all up to you) and see how you like it. You can always drop down from HL to SL if the situation requires it. Best of luck Edit: I forgot an article lol Edited January 7, 2015 by maturk 1 Reply
flinquinnster
Maths HL is definitely a do-able subject, but it is hard work. Given that you want to be an editor/journalist/director in the future and that doesn't really require maths, I would say that you shouldn't force yourself to take a subject that you don't love and might need to spend a lot of time on, and do SL (or even Studies) instead! Whilst it may seem like a good reason, you definitely also shouldn't be choosing your subjects just because your friends are taking it. 1 Reply
Djsporting
Don't do it because your friends are doing it. Do it for yourself. Having your friends in the classroom can be a negative influence to you. Especially in such a rigorous course as Maths HL as maturk said. Remember you'll be the one who will pay the burden in the end. Nonetheless, I must also say that it is extremely interesting and if you like challenges then go for it. Give it a shot, you've got nothing to loose, you can always go back to SL. Who know, you might "fall in love" with Math. I'd give it a shot, any further questions you might have, or clarification feel free to shoot me a P.M. Unis look upon Maths HL as a real 'deal' per say. Something which you will be respected for, think about how accomplished you will feel when you see that Diploma with "Maths HL" on it. 5 Reply
LITHIN MYLAPUR
Hi,I would suggest you to take Math only if1.the universities ask for it or2.you are interested in itDon't take it just because your friends took it.Honestly Math HL is not easy, specially if you are not interested. King112
Dont take it because friends are taking it. Do it if you want to. And, make sure that you pick subjects you like. You can always change, but it gets messy, and so i recommend that you pick your subjects as per your strengths, and what you want to study Reply
