the_Pasquinadist
Hey guys So I'm planning to do my EE in English Literature and pretty much had my RQ finalized until my supervisor raised the issue that my selected works might not be of "literary merit". This is my RQ: The roles of religion and divinity and their clashes with science in Dan Brown’s ‘Inferno’, ‘Da Vinci Code’ and ‘The Lost Symbol’. I've read on the forums that the IBO does prefer classic literature, but is it completely unadvisable to do an english EE on modern science fiction, a la Dan Brown? Will my grade take a hit by doing so? I'm not very keen on classic literature as i find most of it quite dry, apart from the likes of "The Stranger", "The Thief and the Dogs" and "Dracula". Thanks Reply
Blackcurrant
Avoid Dan Brown for any of your IB English Lit. EE. He's a great read, but nothing of that can be considered "of literary merit." No matter how cleverly done, plot-driven, formulaic writing that you read only once for the story itself is fit for airplane travel from one airport to the other. Or the next thriller film. I have to admit that some pap currently High School reading lists is (confusingly) called "literature". Kid in Striped Pyjamas -- which hardly challenges the reading skills or comprehension of a 5 year-old ..and "The Kite Flyer" joins this group too. This last is a good, decently-crafted read, but not much more. It gained attention for other (non-literary) reasons.. Reply
