As Plato suggested in the Republic, the best form of government is a dictatorship in which the dictator is both benevolent and competent. Some examples of such dictators off the top of my head are: Peter I of Russia, Den Xiaoping, and Kemal Ataturk.

However, every type of government has it's faults. But some are arguably better than others. So what form of government do you guys think is the best in terms of efficiency, justice, economy, etc?

The truth is all the systems would be quite good if human nature wasn't full of greed, hatred, egoism etc. And in real world none of these is perfect. Also each society has centuris of experiences, traditions and paradigms meaning that different communities will react to a given system in a different way. We've built quite a lot on the existing systems and there will be a lot of the wealthy and powerful who'd do a lot to oppose changes which could affect their positions.

If we were to start a society from scratch, with humans of perfect nature, I'd pick Anarchism. Because in fact if we were all reasonable, lawful and decent people, we'd need no governing bodies over us. But it's a rather abstract concept and although I do hope it will come true one day, this day may not come before we kill off each other and other living creatures.

But back to real world: democracy is fine for small communities, where an individual has a noticeable influence on the community. If we call "democratic system" the one where we choose from among those who want power, we constitute a ruling caste which will hold on to power with allmethods available.... which is dangerously close to dictatorship. Too often we can see professional politicians who've done nothing else in their lives and therefore have no idea about the problems of their communities and the way they really work.

And for dictatorship.... I don't like being told how to live my life. If there's too much power in too few hands, it's never good for how society works. As Tolkien said:

the most improper job of any man, (...) is bossing other men. Not one in a million is fit for it, and least of all those who seek the opportunity.

And in my opinion this applies to all systems.

I'm not a fan of capitalism either. I mean, it would be alright in a perfect world. But there are always people who are over-ambitious and if we unleashed capitalism, we'd have end up with another dictatorship but this would be a corporate dictatorship rather than the one led by state.

And although socialism sounds tempting it would be hard to implement it successfully either. Socialism requires control, and control means power, which may be abused, and will be abused if someone of malicious intentions gets into the system.

Well, I'm running out of systems.... so as a conclusion I'll repeat what I started from - whatever system there is, it's up to us, individuals and communities what we make out of it. We can't forget that systems are built and run by people, and people vary in personality, priorities etc. I can't see a system which would work with no problems at the moment, but let's hope we'll see some new ideas in the future.

Oh, and I really recommend the Political Compass page which presents some interesting ideas on political systems in general, and some insight into  certain countires.

Why is there no option for communism?

"Other"

So you would suggest putting communism in the same section as fascism, right-wing nationalism or free-market authoritarianism for example?... Are you out of your mind?

Communism as understood by Soviet examples, would  here be "Dictatorial Socialism", at least in my opinion - Schrodinger's CAS please, correct me if I'm wrong. But each communist country had their own variation of communism, so it's hard to associate it with a single system.

And suggesting that somebody is out of their mind in this context is rather rude... to say the least.. If the system is not on the list, it is "Other", and it really doesn't matter whether it's left- or right-wing, authoritarian or libertarian. Two opposing systems won't start a war because of beingclassified as "Other". :P

Except the definition of Dictatorial Socialism would be radically different in the USA than in any other country for example, because 'socialists' in the USA means not left wing but rather centre-right...

And some socialist countries had already made their transition into communism...

Yes, I realize now that I was been too ambiguous. Indeed, there are many variations of communism, but I was referring to the Soviet Communism which arguably had the most profound impact on communist ideology. Thanks for pointing that out!

Democratic Capitalism it is, of course assuming that democracy works (I mean not corrupted, too bureaucratic etc.) :). I don't think too standardizing society (what socialistic societies tend to be) is good, nor I think it's good that only one person holds power. I'm also liberal with my personal values, so if I joined a political party it would be mid to right wing liberalist party :)

I would honestly live under communism. Before you guys start getting angry at me, hear me out :P

Take the Indian state of Kerala(I'm not from there btw) as an example. It is mainly an agricultural state, but it has gone farther than any other state in India, in terms of wealth, and equality. there are more women than men there, and education is a desirable circumstance for women, unlike other parts of india(sadly).

Everyone is given an equal amount of land to own, and are thus earning the same as everyone else. Even people who worked in my brother's industrial factory are living like kings, even though they have pretty meager jobs.

However, people still have equal rights, can use internet, whatever. They aren't hardline communists like North Korea.

This has been due to the fact that Kerala was under rule of the CPI(M) or Communist Party of India(Marxist), who believe in equality for all. They have been ruling for more than a decade, and only recently lost the election polls to the BJP(the political party which is ruling india as a whole).

As I believe in equality for all and in all forms, I prefer this type of communism. What do you guys think?
