Math HL Topic 9: Calculus

Hey guys, so in my school we started the options book finally (Very late. I know.) and I've been able to do a lot of these questions without any problem but these 2 questions in this book are really annoying. I tried to solve them multiple times and I still cant figure it out. I asked my math teacher if he could solve it and after he tried it a few times, he failed and said that there was probably a printing error but i don't think it is. Both these questions look like that have a proper answer but i just dont know how to get to it. Can someone please help me? The questions are on page 29 chapter 1 - Limits of sequences and functions in the Cambridge Mathematics Higher level book.

Questions 5 and 6

I have no idea whatsoever how to solve it, but I might be able to help anyway. Do you have access to the student resources at Cambridge.edu ? You should have a free registration link or something similar in your book and then you can find worker solutions for the whole book :)

Hey bro. sorry I probably won't be of much help since I sit the Nov exams and we haven't even started on our options yet. But if you don't mind I have a question for you, there are only 3 students in HL Math in my school and my teacher has asked us to unanimously decide on which option we'd like to pursue. I really liked the Calculus option so I just was just wondering, is this option interesting? and is this option easier or more difficult that the other options? I know sets and relations sound super boring to me.

Please let me know? :) thanks

Hint: Use the squeeze theorem, noting that gif.latex?|\cos x | \leq 1 for every gif.latex?x. Recall also that a function is continuous at gif.latex?a if gif.latex?\lim_{x \to a} f(x) = f(a).

Edit: The second question (6) is also correct in that there are no printing errors. For every rational number you can find a irrational arbitrarily close to it, so you essentially get a function that jumps between y=x and y=0 rapidly so it is not continuous. The exception however is at x=0, where you are always "close" to 0.

Calculus is a very interesting topic! I **** you not, I would do this than any other option. Though you need to have a good understanding of Differentiation and integration. If you have that then Calculus will be fun. If you dont then you'll struggle because most of the concepts we learn are just extended concepts we did in our Core. Obviously there are new concepts which we learn but these new concepts make use of those we learnt in Differentiation and integration from the core book so it becomes easier to understand and answer questions. (:

This is freaky as hell. there are only 3 students in my Math HL class as well O: And we take the same subjects only instead of Eco I take ITGS.

Ahhh that's great to hear. Thanks a lot man! :) Haha, yeah I'm kind of leaning pretty adamantly towards Calculus. I really enjoyed the core coverage for Integration & Differentiation. Haha, wow really? I see you're sitting your exams in May. Wish you all the best mate! Hopefully we can stay in touch afterwards so I can get some advice off of you once your exams are over. :) thanks again anket
