English EE Research Question - Ayn Rand and the Individual - How should I phrase it?

My research question at the moment is "How does Ayn Rand assess the role of the individual in society, in her novels Anthem and Fountainhead?"

I was told that I had to take a stance, but I saw many other english RQs that were phrased like this. Should my RQ be based more on literary analysis? So, perhaps "How does Rand's use of symbols and syntax aid in her development of the role of the individual in society?". However this RQ too does not allow for a for or against stance. Is that okay? Thanks a bundle :)

I did my EE on Rand's Anthem and George Orwell's 1984!

Your second RQ is fine. To make it a stance, simply change the command term. Change 'how' to 'to what extent' and voila! That assumes you are going to argue that the symbols and syntax aid in her development of the role of the individual in society, of course. I don't think you need to show a stance in your question, but 'how' is essentially 'in what ways,' and neither of those sets you up for analysis. You want 'to what extent' or a command term in that league to set you up for analysis.
