Guest
Ok, I came across Matrices in the notes. Isn't Matrices excluded from the syllabus??? I'm having a heart ache because we were never taught Matrices in school because as per my teachers' knowledge it's taken off the portion!! Somebody please confirm Yes, matrices have been removed from the syllabus. Also thanks a lot for the notes, Very helpful. 155 Pages! that's insane, My summary is only about 10 pages long Edited April 29, 2015 by Guest
steve.muench
You are correct. While working past papers with my daughter from earlier years like 2008, 2009, and 2010, we found some problems that gave a function f(x)=ax^3 + bx^2 + cx and offered three points that the function passed through. Then, the problem asked to determine the values of a, b, and c. Since my daughter had also never learned matrices, she solved the problem manually by using substitution but that ended up taking way longer than the number of minutes suggested by the point-value of the problem. Since the "Press-to-Test" mode disables her calculators equation solver, I added that section into the notes to explain how to setup a Matrix Inverse to basically type in the coefficients and get the answer with the calculator very quickly. However, I since have confirmed with the Head of Maths Department at her school that those type of problems would now never appear on a Standard Level exam after matrices were removed from the curriculum. He confirmed that it would never be more than a system of two variables in two unknowns that would show up on the test.

steve.muench
One week to go. I thought this additional resource could also be helpful to others, since my daughter's class found it useful. They are the worked solutions for the November 2014 exam's paper 1 and paper 2 questions. It includes only the explained solutions, but not the questions since that is copyrighted material. You'll need to get the exam from your teacher at school or download it from the IB store for a small fee. https://stevemuench.wordpress.com/2015/05/04/worked-solutions-for-ib-maths-standard-level-november-2014-exam/ Good luck next week. At the present time I have not had time to expand them to include Maths High Level topics yet, but maybe I will find the time over the summer or in the fall to do that, as well as to provide additional worked test solutions.
