Hi all!

I am currently struggling with a research question for my extended essay in psychology. I am planning to explore the field of dream psychology and I have been reading about freudian theories of dreams and unconscious mind for the past year as I am deeply interested in this field,

These were the topics that I initially came up with:

1.       To what extent do dreams relate to everyday reality?
2.       How can lucid dreaming be rendered as a part of our imagination?
3.       To what extent can lucid dreaming help us gain insight about ourselves?
4.       How does our unconscious mind determine and channel our dream state?

However my teacher tells me that writing on dreams would not make up a good essay at is not a very 'known field' to work on.

So I was hoping to come up with something related to  our unconscious mind but comparatively more precise, also would it be suitable to write on REM sleep and how it affects our dream processes?

Please suggest any ideas or topics that I can work upon.

1. this topic is far too broad, you have to pin point something that you really want to do.

2. is more TOK than psychology

3. you could relate this to gender identity and like the nature vs nurture debate and how that has an effect on your dreams

if you teacher is concerned, you should try to relate it to something more common like something that you have already done and just relate that about dreams.

maybe look for common research on dreams.

I don't take Psychology, so take what I say with a grain of salt. If you want to write about dreams, and you find viable, solid sources to work with, there's no problem with writing an EE on dreams. Consider changing topics if you don't have enough to work with; having enough sources might become an issue, and be ready to change topics if needed. I'd do some searching to see what's out there(it's important to know where to look!), and if what you find that there actually isn't enough information, then maybe listen to your teacher.

As far as I know, to excel at EE in Psychology it would be the best to choose a topic that can be considered in terms of psychological levels of analysis. You cannot carry on your own experiment, you are suppossed to discuss an issue based on the various articles you have gathered throughout your research process (google is your best friend ^^).

To be honest, your topics sound a bit too much like TOK ones. I know that you may be so fascinated in dreams and these theories related to their impact on human psychology so do not give up and just try to re-formulate your topics. Maybe try to focus on dreams in terms of biological level? Unless you are interested in neurons, brain plasticty or genetics at all :P And find some scientific papers! They are important to piece together your bibliography.

Good luck! :)
