YOU_LA
Next year I am starting IB and I am really not shure about my subjects to choose. What do you think? Bio HL Chemistry SLAng HL Polish SLMath HL Psychology SL I love both Biology and math but I am not sure is it a good combination. What courses can I take after this? Maybe I should take Chemistry HL instead of Math and study medicine in the future? Is Chemistry HL difficult? How abouth math HL? What u think? Pleasse... and thx Reply
Sofia.
HL maths is usually said to be harder than HL chemistry. I take both, and I'd say that's true for me - but that's very individual. Bio and chemistry usually go nicely together, as do bio and psychology. What is Ang HL? Language? It seems like a standard selection, apart from maybe maths that might be somewhat challenging. It really depends on what you want to do after IB, though! Some things, like physics, maths and maybe engineering at some schools, would require maths HL, whilst medicine might want chemistry HL. Do you have any idea of what you want to do after this? 1 Reply
YOU_LA
Yeah... That's the point because I think about medicine as well as about economy or finance. That's why I am looking for combination that gives me some capabilities... Ang HL... My fault, I meant English HL. Can I still think about economy wit Bio HL and Chemistry HL and with MAth SL? Sofia.
I don't know much about economics courses - if you have some unis you're interested in you can look it up on their websites. Also, chemistry HL might not be required for medicine either, depending on the university. So that's stuff you have to check with universities. It is usually stated quite clearly on their websites 1 Reply
ShootingStar16
I take chem SL and it can be pretty hard (concepts are easy to understand, but the written response can be ugh sometimes), so I can't imagine chem at HL :/ For math HL, I heard that you have to really love math if you want to take it. Otherwise, it's not worth the stress. English HL.. Are you going into Lit or Lang and Lit? I'm in Lit HL and it's pretty fun and not as hard as my other IB courses. For bio HL, it gets super stressful if you try to cram everything the night before a test, but it's easier to do well in than chem imo. The labs can be fun as well. Maybe you can try checking out uni websites to see what requirements the courses you have fill? And also good to think about what you would like to do in the future. 1 Reply
YOU_LA
Well... I am a bit afraid about Chemistry HL, because, hm, that's the subject that is neutral for me, I don't love it and I don't hate it either... I prefer math, but I see that Bio and Chemistry are better together. That's why i am wondering about replacing them.... Is Chemistry HL logical or it is more to memorize? nevis
Well... I prefer math, but I see that Bio and Chemistry are better together. That's why i am wondering about replacing them.... Is Chemistry HL logical or it is more to memorize? I have HL Chem and HL Bio, so I know them both Imo biology is so much easier than chemistry. In biology, you have a few complicated things to learn (protein synthesis, photosynthesis, cell respiration, genes etc in detail), but then there are many SUPER easy areas as well! I mean, evolution and ecology are pretty much common knowledge. In biology, you just have to learn a lot of terminology but you'll do fine if you study it all year long and not just cram for the test day before. Chemistry.. well, it's more abstract and thus harder for me to learn. In my last mocks, I made a really common mistake: I studied all the theory but didn't do almost any calculations. The calculations themselves aren't that hard but you have to get used to the methods if you want to apply the basic formulas to more complicated exercises. There are some easier chapters, yes, but I find most of them okay or hard-ish We are atm going through the HL sections of energetics and thermochemistry and it's SO HARD ugh 1 Reply
turtle turtle
Science and math subjects tend to be a lot harder than the ones in other groups, unless you have a knack or intuition for them. It's odd seeing that you are hoping to do Maths HL even though Physics isn't even one of your subjects (People who like maths tend to take to physics). So unless you pick up maths really quickly, i'd suggest doing SL in year 12. Seeing as you're from Poland, Polish HL could be an option? Psychology is also an easy subject. For me, when choosing HLs and SLs, I take 3 things into account: 1/ Difficulty of the subject 2/ How natural you are at the subject (esp. maths, science)3/ How interested are you in the subject But if you work hard, they're certainly doable, so good luck! 1 Reply
