So I have been told that there is no word limit for IAs...but I don't know why, one of my IAs is 5,000 words (the other ones are around 4,000). It is probably not recommendable because it is really time-consuming, but can you actually get penalized? I mean, should I go back and summarize it or get rid of sections?\

Thanks a lot

For which subject?

Math, there is no word limit, but history has a word limit of 2,000 words and Eco has 750.Which subject does matter, so I think we would need to know that.

the 5,000 words one is chemistry and the others biology

thanks both for your answers :)

As far as I know, there is not a word limit, however, do not try to fit a large number of words using a smaller font, as the examiners may mark you down for that.

Does this sound reasonable?

12 point font, times new roman, single spaced. 11 pages, including pictures, graphs, data tables, diagrams, etc. (but excluding bibliography).

Thanks :)

Or is 12point font single spaced too small and too squeezed?

Yeah, I believe that is fine! Although you might want to try atleast 1.15 spacing just I case (if you can).

For Biology and Chemistry, there is no word limit for syllabus prior to 2016.

And for the 2016 science syllabi. I only heard/read 6-12 pages... Is there a word limit?

I remember reading somewhere that if you go over 12 pages, you're penalised for lack of conciseness.

Wait is this only for 2016 or before?

However, do keep in mind that you should be concise and clear in your IA - if you're trying to fish around for words, you may get penalised. I'd try to keep it objective - here's the data, here's qualitative info, limitations, whatever. Sometimes you can even put stuff in bullet points, like your limitations and methodology to carrying out the experiment.

If there was a change to IA process for 2016 syllabus, then I guess that probably doesn't help unless it is page limit (which it may, I dunno).

I'd ask your teacher/IB coordinator though just to be safe - at least the IB coordinator will be up to date on the information!

Sorry for the late reply!

It says in the Bio guide for 2016 examination onwards that "The internal assessment task will be one scientific investigation taking about 10 hours and the write-up should be about 6 to 12 pages long. Investigations exceeding this length will be penalized in the communication criterion as lacking in conciseness."

That is correct ^

Basically there is no word limit for the sciences but it shouldn't exceed 12 pages since you need to be concise.

Also, for ITGS (my group three subject), there's word limits for each criterion, and some criterion are what's called 'free form text'. I don't know about other humanities subjects though.
