Hello! Im starting IB in September 2015, and I've realised I might want to do something in the bio/chem field when I'm older, so I'm thinking of swapping my physics slot for chemistry. However, I didnt take IGCSE chem and have only done the very basics in middle school. Will i find SL chemistry very difficult?

would be recommended to take igcse chem cause sl chem is pretty much at the same level at igcse (same level but you learn a bit more on the topic)

but you will still be able to catch up if you had no prior knowledge towards chem

the only problem comes into play when you think about doing hl

SL chemistry can be taken with little background in chemistry as it starts off with the basics in topics 1 and 2.

That said, it will be advantageous for you to have a background in chemistry and the IGCSE will give you just that.

I don't think that the IGCSE is the same level as SL chemistry. SL chemistry is a higher level course. It is more comparable to the AS level in the UK, whereas the IGCSE would be taken before the AS.

I don't think you'll have that big of a problem. You don't need that much of a foundation to do decent in SL chem because you have a fresh start. I think the only thing you might probably need is knowing how to balance chemical equations, but they do go over this stuff with you.
