How significant was the influence of opium wars on the social and economic problems in eastern asia throughout the 1900's. This was my initial RQ, however my supervisor says that the time period and region is too big to handle.

yeah try focusing on a specific country in eastern asia and continue on with your research to see what timeline was the most significant.

that should be fine since you have a lot more words to answer the question in compared to the IA. However, if you find that it's still too much to write about in a 4000 word paper, focus on one country and/or narrow down the timeline. Stick with that for now and later on, just look at your research one last time to see if it can fit into the word limit.

I have decided the topic and everything. But the essay has to be argumentative right? Please could you tell me on how to go about the essay?

Yeah it's argumentative. Ok I suggest that at the beginning, you set the stage for your RQ by providing some historical context and you also have to clearly establish why your topic is worthy of investigation. Have a solid thesis in your intro. In your body, you evaluate the information you can find. Remember to have counterarguments and if possible, try linking to the OPVL of your sources. In your conclusion, I think you restate your answer to the question and sum it up. After you're done all of that, write your abstract. What helps is to look at EE exemplars online.
