New IB school, should I do Math HL?

I will be in the first graduating class in the IB program at my school. My school just barely got inducted and accepted to the program, so my teachers and I have been learning everything IB along side each other in the past year. My teachers and I are very knowledgeable about the program itself, but like I said this will be our first year so none of my teachers have really experienced it. I aim to study engineering so I naturally want to take math HL. I enjoy maths more than any other class, and I love learning about it. The only problem is since this will be my schools first year it may be challenging. The director of my school doesn't recommend me doing Math HL, but she will allow me to take it. One of the people from the IB organization told me that first year IB schools sometimes don't allow math SL let alone Math HL. I know it will be beneficial for  me if I can do it, but I don't want to disrupt my work load if it is hard enough without HL. I would be the only student in my school doing HL and I would have to study all of the HL parts outside of class. Is it recommended, and has anyone been in a similar situation?

Although I take HL Maths lessons in school, I think it would be perfectly possible to self-learn the course if you have the interest and passion. Although ib workload is heavy, it is supposed to be heavy and if you are serious about engineering you should take Maths HL. Not taking the subject may narrow the scope of university you can choose from. Although you don't take proper lessons from school, I'm assuming that you could ask your teachers some questions about any topic you struggle with. You can also ask this forum about a certain question you don't understand. I often do this with past paper questions.

Hope this helped!

I am most interested and passionate about maths and I realize the work will be tedious, but never impossible. I will have to take maths SL in class and I have access to all of my teachers if I need them. My Maths teacher told me he would help me every step of the way after school. I am also dedicating a study hall to prep and maths HL, so I think it will doable. Thanks for the input
