English A EE Topic -- The Woman in Black

I'm in my first year of IB and teachers haven't talked about the EE yet, but I've started thinking of possible topics. This topic has been on my mind since freshman year, when my English teacher talked about comparing one piece of work over three different mediums (Novel, Movie, and Live Theatre).

I'm planning to do an English Language and Literature EE on the use of character in The Woman in Black through the three mediums, making my research question:

"How and why are the characters in The Woman in Black portrayed through three different mediums: Novel, Movie, and Live theatre?"

I've also thought of discussing setting instead of characters.

Would this be a feasible EE topic, and would it be okay to place it under English A: Language and Literature (since my school doesn't have an English Lit teacher)? Also, do you think it would be better to analyse just one character, several (3-4) or all the characters? There aren't a lot of characters in the story, so I think it would be feasible to do all, but should I narrow it down a little bit? Any other input on my EE topic would be welcome!

Personally, I've never seen or read 'The Woman in Black' but it sounds like a really interesting topic! However, I'd like to remind you that this is a 4000 word essay, and if you hope to cover multiple characters, in depth, across three different genres... well, that's fairly ambitious, and particularly difficult. Whilst EEs should be broad enough to allow you to write around 4000 words, they do have to be narrow enough that you don't end up going completely overboard!

I'd recommend you choose one character, perhaps two, and see how they're shown in the different genres. You might even see that you can't do all three genres and therefore you can only do two of them! Or perhaps you'll realise you only got to two thousand words and can slip in another character. The thing I love about English is that, if you know what you're doing and have the text in front of you, you can easily add more, which is brilliant and why I hate memorising quotes, like how pointless is that it doesn't teach you anything.

Of course, I'm not planning on doing an English EE, nor have I (obviously) done one, and therefore I can't give you much more help, but it's just something I'd like to point out.

Note: I hope you mean that you wish to go to one of those unis and not all of them. Unless you plan to do a multitude of degrees, in which case, may I join you?

though i have not read the book, i do my extended essay in english language and literature. i think concentrating on just one character insightfully in three genres would work however it will just be messy and difficult to go through all this genres so i'd advise you to focus on one character in two genres, that is easy as you will get to explore and compare certain features about this character coherently and the topic will narrow enough to cover 4000 words.

I think one or two characters across two genres would be about right! I'll probably conduct research for several characters across all the genres, and then decide which characters across which genre to write about. Thank you for your help!

And yes, I do mean only one, though I'm thinking of a double degree + a master's degree so maybe I will try for more than one of the listed unis.. :P

What are you doing for your EE? How is it working out for you so far? I think I'd do one character, maybe two if there's enough space. Thanks for your help!
