How to present in IOP in a way thats not boring?

Recommended Posts

Hey so Im doing a George Orwell essay (Revenge is Sour) and I was just wondering how to present it in a way thats not boring to the audience. I was going to say a monologue or a poem i made at the beginning of my presentation and then do an analysis. But i thought that may be to common. Any suggestions on what I could do? Thanks!

Generally, people either approach the IOP in a more creative way or as an essay. I did the latter and still received a good grade, but I know some people who did creative presentations who did just as well. What I mean is that it doesn't really have to be flashy, and in fact it shouldn't be; honestly, my essay was quite boring to anyone who didn't really care (most people), but it was thoughtful and in depth. If you want to do a creative IOP, that's fine, but it should be well thought-out and well analysed. I think that your idea of presenting a monologue and then analysing it is good. Just because it's "common" doesn't mean it's bad. What makes it good is how you do it.

The most important thing is not to be interesting, but to choose a presentation style that suits you.  If it doesn't come naturally, it will seem forced, awkward, and uncomfortable to watch.  I can't act to save my life, so I had to settle on just a normal presentation.  However, going for the "boring" route doesn't have to be boring at all! If you don't think you can pull off something dramatic, make use of tone, gesture, explanation...all of those presentation techniques.  I highlighted words in my notes that I wanted to stress, or pause after.  Remember you're just presenting to your teachers: you've been speaking to them all year.  Really explain it to them, engage with them, as though you're having a conversation (without being casual).  Look up speaking techniques if you're not sure what they are.  Even with my convention presentation, I scored a 10 in delivery, and so did a number of people I know who did the same thing as me.  Like the poster above said, it doesn't have to be flashy.  It just has to be good.  So don't stress about creativity if you don't want to!
