HL/SL Functions Question

Hello All,

A function is expressed as:

y-k=f(x-h)

where (h, k) is a translation vector.

By drawing x2 and (x-1)2, I can see that the x+1 now takes the y-value of x.

But how do we derive this general equation? Surely, it couldn't have been derived by sketching a pair of graphs, and seeing what happens at each point!!

Thanks in advance!
