Torn between IB classes

Hello fellow pre-IB students! I recently handed in my application to do the IB Diploma Programme, but ever since I handed it in I've been second guessing the subjects I chose. These subjects are that I chose:

English A: Literature HL

Spanish ab initio (SL)

History HL

Chemistry HL

Sports, Exercise, and Health Sciences SL

Math SL

Canadian curriculum Physics during summer

And I obviously have ToK, EE, and CAS.

I like all the subjects I've chosen, but I'm unsure about History HL. Should I take History HL or Psychology HL? I'm interested in both subjects, but I'm afraid I will not be interested in History and it will be too late. Also, I plan on studying sciences in university and my goal is to study medicine after I get my bachelors degree. I know it doesn't matter what group 3 subject I choose as I will most likely never study it again. I just wanted to know if I should stick to History HL or change to Psychology HL. I know from current IB students that the teachers for both History and Psychology are equally as great so the teacher is not an issue. Which one should I take? Any advice is appreciated. :)

I don't know if they allow this in your school, but in mine, you have 6 months to change your subjects if you want to. If your school allows you to do this, sit in a history class and a psychology class and see which one you find more interesting. If it were me, I'd go with the one that's easier to score in (for me its psych). If you can't change it afterwards, then I suggest you do some research about both the subjects and then choose the one you find better. If you have any other problem related to this or anything IB, you can PM me, or check my blog.

Hi!

I personally think you should take Psychology HL. Psychology HL, will definitely help you get a good start on your career goal.

History HL, will not benefit you if you are planning to study sciences in university.

Good Luck!

Chantel  :)

Let me just start by saying that I take History HL and love it to bits. It's, by far, my favourite subject. But, I have been very interested in history for a long time now, and I'm even considering studying it in university. I also take Psychology, but at SL, and definitely enjoy that subject, too!

BUT, considering you're planning on pursuing a career within sciences, and ultimately medicine, I would recommend going for Psychology HL. It would probably look better on a personal statement, plus you would have the option of angling towards medical psychiatry.

If you're very interested in history as well, you could possibly try to rearrange your subject choices so that you could have it as a SL in addition to Psychology HL.

Also, ask your IB Coordinator if there is a possibility of changing subjects after you have started in the IBDP, and had the opportunity to try the subjects out. We were allowed to do so for the first 1-2 months in my school.
