So we're choosing our classes for next school year (I'll be a junior, first year in the IB program) and I'm a little uncertain about what I should take. Right now I've got a tentative schedule planned out:IB EnglishIB HistoryIB Physics SLIB SpanishAP BC CalculusIB Theory of KnowledgeIB EconomicsThis feels like a pretty heavy class load, so I'm wondering if anyone can give me advice/info on any of these classes and whether I should drop a class?? Elc Posted February 3, 2016 Report Share Posted February 3, 2016 Wait, I don't think AP counts as a substitute for an IB mathematics course. Correct me if I am wrong, but I had friends do additional AP but not AP for IB. I believe you do need to do IB mathematics to obtain a diploma. So.. you'd probably either substitute your AP Calculus course for IB mathematics, or do both. Other than that, you also need an extra subject since you only have 5 IB subjects other than TOK. Maths will do the trick in that case. Also, on a side note, how confident are you with physics? I guess it depends on your career interest, but solely based on your subject choices, you seem to be lean towards the humanities side. If you are good with physics, I guess it will be fine, but if other science subjects (chemistry, biology) are on a similar level, I'd strongly recommend doing the other ones as physics is usually the most difficult subject to study (also with the lowest 7 rate). kw0573 Posted February 4, 2016 Report Share Posted February 4, 2016 You should probably specify SL and HL for your IB coursesIf your BC Math is switched for HL Math then it seems like a doable courses an IB student would take. IB is meant to be completed in two years so you will likely take the same credit next year. To get the diploma you should probably go for HL Math (or SL Math). It's not too difficult to AP tests in addition to IB because the exam periods are shifted by about half a month and you don't need and other assessment for AP other than the test itself. Ditteee Posted February 4, 2016 Report Share Posted February 4, 2016 As was mentioned before, to get the IB Diploma, your need 6 IB subjects - TOK is part of the core, is compulsory and does not count in the six subjects. This means that either you take an IB mathematics subject rather than IB, or those a subject more. Now, I don't know if it differs in the US, but that is at least how it is where I study. Consider which subjects you want on HL and SL, as these be a huge indicator of workload - without the levels, it's very hard to tell how much work it'll be. Also, for the Languauges, you need to figure out if you're doing the A or B levels, and if you're taking Literature or Language and Literature.
