I need a music student's help: MIDI numbers

Hello!

For my math ia I'm working with the relationship between math and music and I need someone to explain to me what a MIDI note number is. I've tried googling it but I'm still fairly confused as to what the number actually is/represents. I really need to know this before I can continue with my ia so fast responses would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

From what i can understand, Midi numbers are representations of each note on a virtual midi keyboard. To help you understand,  a conventional piano or keyboard has 88 keys, (this includes black and white notes). A virtual midi keyboard contains up to 128 notes, much more than a piano or keyboard! Due to the virtual midi keyboard having more keys than the conventional piano or keyboard. A number must be assigned, so that one knows what key is what. Bellow i have attached an image taken from http://cote.cc/blog/logic-studio-9-midi-note-numbers which identifies which midi number is assigned with which note on the keyboard.

If you are still unsure, don't hesitate and ask further questions!

Additionally, if you don't know what certain terms mean, such as octave, C#, etc. are, just ask, and i'll tell you what they mean =)!

Hope this helps. ^_^
