laylaT
Hey guys, I was wondering if Fourier series and analysis is a suitable topic for the math investigation for HL. I wanted to investigate Fourier and music, maybe something to do with modeling consonance/harmony or how it applies to different types of music. However, my math teacher believes the math is a little challenging and needs extensive explanation of physics concepts. Has anyone experimented with Fourier before, what kinds of approaches have you taken to fourier? do you think this could make a good IA? Thanks Layla Reply
kw0573
Although I am not too familiar with Fourier transform, it is a topic of sufficient difficulty for HL. As a math exploration, you don't need to explain a lot of physics beyond speed/wavelength/period/frequency of a wave. Some of the challenging aspects include finding expressions for the resultant waves for the consonance/harmony/instrument of your choice. LolzDoingIB
I would recommend you to do something more original. As I have heard many people choose Fourier transforms for their maths IA. But if you still want to do it then try to be creative! Reply
