Study guides

Depends more on your teacher than anything else.

For me for instance, no guide is needed in History or Maths, as my teachers are pretty good and they cover topics in a manner that I remember them pretty well, as well as they hold their lessons in a way that lends itself for taking good notes. However, in Physics, where I have a teacher who can barely speak English and does not understand many of the concepts we are learning, the study guide I have is not only essential for good marks, it is essential for passing the class.

I think the best thing for you to do is to wait it out, meet your teachers, see how their teaching style works with your learning style and get guides only in the classes in which you feel like you need a bit of extra help to achieve what you want to achieve. The guides are mostly made for repetition too, so you won't be missing out on too much if you only get them a few months into IB anyway.
