Well its that time of year again, and TOK classes everywhere are working on the dreaded TOK presentation.

The very purpose of the TOK presentation has been mocked by the long list of botched presentations (including but not limited to: poor raps, random video clips, insufficient, unprepared rambling, and interpretive dance... yes, it happens), but enough about those. I want to hear about the great TOK presentations that really just made you think about something in a way you haven't before.

So far, my favorite TOK topic was one which compared Religiosity and the Gross Domestic Product of nations. They compared the cultures and how different cultures value different things (primarily religion and economic prosperity) with respect to emotion, authority, and reason. It was quite interesting.

So what types of interesting topics have you seen presented?

Mine was, and was repeated at my school this year :D copy cats, the trade in illegal kidneys.

Another interesting one told to me today was the Effects of tourism on Indigenous tribes.

My friend did Prostitution last year, another did the effects of the American Military base in Okinawa. Those are the interesting ones, the others are pretty boring like Performance Enhancing Drugs :D

I miss doing TOK Presentations...

Well, the five I remember from my class of thirty for being good were:

Galactical separation and the ethics of astronomy.

The illusion of free will and the robot question.

The implications of entanglement and quantum theory as they apply to existentialism.

The ethics behind youth sentencing.

Suicide and euthanasia as they pertain to dependency.

Mine was on the uses and misuses of the internet. I got practically perfect :P
I did surveys in the school, on the internet and I got a friend to do a survey for me in another country.
I asked about what they use and misuse the internet for. I also asked what they think others use/misuse the internet for. I got really interesting results. I'll go find them for your enjoyment.

This shows that the internet is NOT for porn, despite what most people think. Also it shows that not a lot of people hack.. it was the lowest score, but everyone's paranoid about hackers.

Some of the things I discussed were the evolution of media, shooped images, forums, wikipedia, 4chan, admin power abuse, facebook, etc.
Somehow I apparently linked it to Masslow's Hierarchy of needs, sense/reported/inferred knowledge and to what extent we should trust our senses on the internet less than in real life.
I talked really fast and barely squeezed it under the time limit, but I think I managed to link everything together well and give it a real purpose. Too bad I had to present it to only my teacher and maybe 2 students because short timelines made me present at lunch :/

Hey, about the presentation comparing Religiosity and the GDP of nations-- which nations did they focus on? I'm considering doing a similar topic... THANKS!

I did one on Higgs Boson, and went into the issue of whether experiments being carried out in CERN pose a threat or are needed.... even the ethical dillema on whether the vast funds should be spent on a mere theory. Lot of great stuff to say and amazing concepts to learn.

Our school just did our TOK presentations, a few interesting ones were:

- 4'33" - John Cage. What defines music?
- Bystander effect. A news in NYC where a beggar was stabbed as he was trying to help a Lady get her purse back from a robber. He bled on the street for more than an hour while many people passed by and didn't call an ambulance.
- Artificial Intelligence degrading our brain capacity? RLS was about the sixth sense
- The effect of video games with blood and gore on teenagers and young kids
- Bullfighting

All knowledge issue are equally interesting. So whether your presentation is interesing or not has nothing to do with the knowledge issue. A presentation on whether our sense perceptions are reliable could create the most disastrous of presentations or a really interesting one; it will depend on how you approach the knowledge issue, what examples you use and, of course, how well you present and engage the audience.

Comparison of 2 news paper articles and how language plays a role and of the different perspectives of different countries
on a global issue that concerns all these countries. The emphasis lied on the importance of language and words and what i found really interesting was that
the loss in meaning during translation! o.0 :) highly entertaining and simply fascinating.
