Well, I learned in IB psych class,
that getting such a low amount of sleep all the time can actually HURT your brain! Trust me! I know! My test taking abilities have been hindered by my 5-6 hours a night sleep! Yeah, and it seriously messes up your memory! AND I learned that if you have a exam the following day for a class, staying up all night and studying isn't exactly effective! Meaning that instead of losing sleep to study, it is better to get the good night's sleep than stay up all night to study!
BUT, I honestly have not pulled an all-nighter, but I did come close! In December, the night before my psych IA was due, I only got TWO hours of sleep! I spent like 7 hours straight on the computer making the final adjustments and revising and making sure I met the word count. I fell asleep at about 2:30 am-ish, and I had to wake up at 4:30 am to get ready for school! Mhmm, I am not kidding! I have to catch the bus at lke 5:30 am. I have a ONE AND A HALF HOUR bus ride to school! We get to school at SEVEN! And you'd think that there would be special transportation for the IB kids, right? :sadnod:  Nope. <_< -_-

Ouch. And I thought waking up at 6:30 and getting to school every day at 7:20 was bad...

To reply to the original question, I've never pulled an all-nighter. I've stayed up late doing IAs though...I think the latest was 4 am for a math portfolio...and 2.5 hours of sleep! I learned my lesson with the type II portfolio but I still paid for it with a bad grade on my first portfolio. I try to manage my time well but sometimes it just doesn't happen =P

As for studying for tests I usually just give up at 10:30/11ish. Nothing really sinks into my head after that point so I figure it's best to just call it a night and get a decent amount of sleep...Even if I tried to stay up I wouldn't remember what I learned at 1 am anyways.

Has any IB student pulled an all nighter, or close to one?

The latest I've slept was 6:00 am, to complete an IA.

Hahah, I have pulled sooooo many all nighters, and sometimes I don't even know if they can be classified as all-nighters because my internal clock can get screwed up very easily, and before I know it i'm sleeping for hours after school and then wake up around eight and won't go back to sleep until after school the next day. I love, love, LOVE studying during the evening/night. I despise studying during the day, I don't know why. I'm such a night owl. As much as I dislike studying in general, it's so much easier when it's dark outside. I wouldn't advise pulling an all-nighter before an exam though, I've done it once and it was for sociology during pre-ib; I managed to get a 10, but I think that had more to do with the difficulty level of the test rather than the fact that I hadn't slept at all. I think it's too risky, and I would much rather prepare a lot before hand, anticipating the exam or accept the reality of my situation the night before, and accept the consequences that follow.

those who have never pulled an all-nighter, I am very jealous of! you guys are either really smart people, or uncaring about what grades you get in ib.
I've had to stay up at least 4 times without sleeping at all. :/ stupid ib. lets team up and sue them.

Just because there are some students that don't stay up late procrastinating, doesn't mean that they don't care what their grades are. I have friends who turn in assignments on time because they don't procrastinate, whereas I do the opposite and miss school to finish. I should also be handing in work on time.

I can only second that, last mock exams I only had about 1 hour sleep as I had to finish my EE, fell asleep for the first 30 mins of my English P1... Another protip: don't ever do 3 days in a row!

I pulled way too many all-nighters, even before the IB, by now I got to sleep everyday at 12-1 am, wake up at 5 once and get up at 6.30.

Yeah just pulled one recently for my math portfolio. It was especially nasty since I didn't sleep much the whole week (4-5 hours) so then I was like a complete zombie. By morning (when I was all finished), I felt like I don't even care about my assignments, I just wanted to sleep.  Coffee made me feel better though.
