Our economics teacher emailed this to us ...

Economics models explained.......... with cows

SOCIALISM
You have 2 cows.
You give one to your neighbor.

COMMUNISM
You have 2 cows.
The State takes both and gives you some milk.

FASCISM
You have 2 cows.
The State takes both and sells you some milk.

NAZISM
You have 2 cows.
The State takes both and shoots you.

BUREAUCRATISM
You have 2 cows.
The State takes both, shoots one, milks the other, and then throws the milk away.

TRADITIONAL CAPITALISM
You have two cows.
You sell one and buy a bull.
Your herd multiplies, and the economy grows.
You sell them and retire on the income.

SURREALISM
You have two giraffes.
The government requires you to take harmonica lessons.

AN AMERICAN CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You sell one, and force the other to produce the milk of four cows.
Later, you hire a consultant to analyze why the cow has dropped dead.

A FRENCH CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You go on strike, organize a riot, and block the roads, because you want three cows.

A JAPANESE CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You redesign them so they are one-tenth the size of an ordinary cow and produce twenty times the milk.
You then create a clever cow cartoon image called 'Cowkimon' and market it worldwide.

A GERMAN CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You re-engineer them so they live for 100 years, eat once a month, and milk themselves.

AN ITALIAN CORPORATION
You have two cows, but you don't know where they are.
You decide to have lunch.

A RUSSIAN CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You count them and learn you have five cows.
You count them again and learn you have 42 cows.
You count them again and learn you have 2 cows.
You stop counting cows and open another bottle of vodka.

A SWISS CORPORATION
You have 5000 cows. None of them belong to you.
You charge the owners for storing them.

A CHINESE CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You have 300 people milking them.
You claim that you have full employment, and high bovine productivity.
You arrest the newsman who reported the real situation.

A BRITISH CORPORATION
You have two cows.
Both are mad.

AN IRAQI CORPORATION
Everyone thinks you have lots of cows.
You tell them that you have none.
No-one believes you, so they bomb the **** out of you and invade your country.
You still have no cows, but at least now you are part of a Democracy.

AN AUSTRALIAN CORPORATION
You have two cows.
The one on the left looks very attractive

lol :S  :)

#54129 What is the difference between HL, SL, Studies? Which to take?

I just want to ask a question but I'm not sure where to ask. Is Maths HL mandatory for engineering? Does chemical engineering require a lot of Maths?
Whether or not it's mandatory depends on the particular university and program. Best to check out the univ's site for specific prerequisites and other requirements. -_-
And all engineering requires a math + chem + phys, and perhaps bio, if I'm not mistaken.

#54120 Swine flu

There have been a couple of outbreaks of swine flu over here. As I read in the local news, two Indians who came here have been diagnosed with swine flu. I'm also being wary of the flu because I go out to the mall quite a lot and our school is full of expat teachers and students. I also travel a lot so that could largely influence my relationship with swine flu. I have the normal flu and I'm a bit scared. What's the difference between swine flu and regular flu?

Where it comes from and how likely you are to die from it xP Swine flu is actually less problematic than seasonal flu in terms of actual deaths/complications arising from it. It's just that swine flu is new, we know less about it and it's very contagious. The risks of problems are actually higher for "normal" flu.

I have submitted a site review so hopefully the malware warning will disapear soon, might have to work on it with my server provider though.

Cheers for the comments Feist I agree, at times i feel the kids who chose SACE (the regular schooling path in south australia), were the smarter ones. I have been experimenting with various styles, began with the xkcd basic stick figure black and white style, might try branching into simple colour or something on the next couple that i make

For those who dont want to/are too busy with IB to check out the links I have attached a couple

#54116 The 'Something I always wanted to know the answer to' thread

Posted sweetnsimple786 on Aug 03, 2009 - 13:13

Aw lol
The changes in pressure when you fly would cause babies and little children to cry. Your ears hurt because your body's trying to maintain homeostasis. Finally after your ears pop or whatever, you feel better. In the meantime, you grit your teeth while a baby... cries. Also, I'd guess infants' heads are more sensitive? But that's just a guess.

#54042 General IB Knowledge - Ask mini-questions about IB here

I just wanted to ask something before starting IB - when do they register you for exams (i.e. upto what time of the year is it possible to drop a subject from HL to SL)?

At my school they ordered exams during second semester of junior year. We went through a schedule verification stage so that they ordered the right exams (where you could change your exam once and for all). However some schools might have their own policies about this, and order the exams as soon as the deadline comes up before talking to students, so be aware of that. the best thing to ask is that you are having doubts about the nature of your schedule, and want to know the final date for scheduling decisions which you may have.

HSHS Website Experimental Sciences Internal Assessment: A good guide on how to write them
Online Literature It 's a great resource, and has web versions of hundreds of different literary classics, all of Shakespeare's plays, Wilde's, Greek playwrights, etc. The best feature, is that there is a quote feature, where you can type one word, and it will bring up every quote containing it, from whatever piece you are studying. I use it a lot when I am writing about symbolism and motifs, because you can type in something like "blood", and you'll get 20 quotes about it from Macbeth.

#53105 What would you do if you were in control of IB Survival.com

Posted sweetnsimple786 on Jul 23, 2009 - 21:18

Could we have a mini dictionary?
For example, I didn't know practicals were the same thing as labs/experiments until last week-ish. I wasn't exposed to much of the IB terminology because my teachers just didn't use it. I still don't know what Group 1, 2, 3, and 4 works are for Language A1--stuff like that. A quick reference guide thing. I wouldn't mind making a compilation and pdf'ing it, but I'm not a know-it-all. I'd need plenty of help.

Quote

i'm just really excited about taking IB, i've been surfing this site all day

I like your enthusiasm, but as Aboo said, IB is alot of work and you MUST enjoy your holiday, because next summer holiday you will be working the whole time to finish EE and CAS. :P

IGCSEs are important for you to decide wether or not yuo're able to do IB. I have done my IGCSEs and have 'flunked' two subjects which I didnt take in IB (Business: 'D' and french 1st language: 'E'), yet i still did IB and expecting good results (except for math :) ).

I would say it depends on the grades you're getting for every subject. You are planning on taking Biology HL, I assume that you have taken it in IGCSE as extended. Honestly, if you dont get at least an 'A' in it, I might consider taking SL, because being very good at IGCSE BIO EXTENDED is a very good way of succeeding in IB BIO HL, at least in my case.

Same goes for math, although, IGCSE math is almost nothing compared to IB math in all its levels ; its much harder and more demanding.

One thing I would say I regret not doing, is doing a bit of math in the summer before IB :) . So if you are really keen to do something this summer, strengthen your mathematic abilities, it will help you throughout trust me.

Goodluck anyways :P .

Posted sweetnsimple786 on Jul 16, 2009 - 15:11

The way I see it, you have two paths you can take.

IB hasn't been a priority for you so far, so let it stay the same. Good chance you won't get the diploma. If that's not a problem, then that seems like the way to save effort.

Or, if you want your diploma, and you're trying to straighten your act, then your motivation truly needs to come from you. Make your own schedule--you're more likely to stick to it. What I'd suggest is going to the local library or doing so internet searches for your EE topic. If you have the topic, go to your local library to get your sources. Once you get a feel for the info, make an outline for your essay. Contact your supervisor immediately and tell him or her that you've screwed up, and you realize it, but you're serious now. Keep him or her updated and show him/her the outline. It's quite important for the supervisor to see your first draft. Not only for you but for IB too. They can't tell if you've plagiarized or not if they don't know that you started from scratch.

Also, there's no magic solution for CAS. It's easier if you're doing things you like, but either way, it needs to get done. Click here to see what 100+ people have done.

You said doing homework feels wrong. Why? Do you think that you don't need to do it? That it's busy work? It's usually not, and it will help you. If you decide not to do any homework or assignments, see the first path again.

One more thing. On some level, most of us take education for granted. Even if we pay tremendously for it. There are countless adolescents who are illiterate. They don't have access to any of the opportunities you have. If you don't want to do IB, don't. No one's holding a gun to your head. However, you've got it set, compared to many others. Even as you zone out through your classes, you have access to something priceless. It's your choice what you do with your opportunities. It's never too late.

#147 Introduction to TOK - Bits of TOK wisdom & advice

Posted ~Lc~ on Jul 19, 2007 - 21:28

To every confused soul out there who is yet to start their first year in IB and fear the nice philosophical subject of TOK. This here thread is me explaining to you what exactly this subject is:).

What is TOK?

The Theory of knowledge is a branch in Philosophy which, when learned, enables one to think about and evaluate the knowledge that we gain rather than just accept it as "truth".

In English: we learn how to not be suckers and believe everything we're told  .

Why go through the pain and agony of learning it?

Well basically, because the IBO says so

But really, after my IB experience I've realized the point of the IBO actually including TOK as a requirements for Diploma.

When I started writing my World literature assignment and my Historical investigation for English A1 and Islamic History, I found myself making TOKish claims in these essays. In fact, a whole criteria for the Hisrotical investigation (Criterion D: evaluation of the Study) was basically TOK mambo jumbo. So my theory is that the IBO are smart enough (or this could be coincidence) to teach us TOK so as we could produce decent essays when starting to work on our IAs  .

Though this might be me over-analyzing things due to making a huge part of my life TOK! My point being! it's not useless! so pay attention in TOK class!

What do I have to do after I learn it?

Your TOK grade will be out of 60. 20 marks of this grade will depend on a presentation you will have to do (either in a group or individually- mind each person would have to finish 10 minutes of speaking) on a title which you will discuss in a TOKish manner. The rest of the 40 marks will be awarded to you depending on an essay you will write on what is called a "prescribed title". These titles are given to you by the IBO (try googling for it -for example if I wanted to find the file with the prescribed titles for my year I'd google "May 2007 TOK prescribed title).

There is a criteria for grading your TOK essays and presentations. To write a good essay and make a good presentation, I suggest you read the marking criteria first, then start off. I will have the criteria on here as soon- I'm on holiday, you all cause chaos to my relaxation plan right now :dash: .

So there it is. The whole package...

Now the point of me being here (after I've finished with my TOK course and IB altogether) is my helping you people get through it as well, and hopefully with much better grades  .

Stop the BS and help us out already... is probably what you're thinking as you read through this post   so here's the deal chicks and dudes (yes I have finished IB, and yes I still say chicks and dudes B)): priary step to helping you out is providing you with essay outlines for your year's title. I'm taking the liberty of making may 07 and may 07 title outline myself which you can find here (if all you can see is essay titles in those articles then I probably haven't gotten the time to post the essay outlines on there yet   -it's a work in progress).

If you are a candidate for a different session and want advice on some essays, then post a thread in this forum and me and other members (who we'll have soon :read: ) would love to give you some pointers :D .
