#155706 Final Words to May '12 Candidates

Posted Trololol Marf on Apr 08, 2012 - 02:14

There's less than a month left until we're finished, and at this point I'd like to offer and extend my congratulations to those who've made it this far. And I can say I've had it only more or less as bad as you have. I hope you have taken some time to congratulate yourselves, but not too much! The end of our perilous journey is near, but no less challenging.

We've braved through things we thought were hell, done things that didn't make sense, and stayed up those nights that we thought we didn't. Worked like hell, swore through assignments, petrified by unconverted marks, bled through each page of an A1 reading we detested. But no, you didn't let that keep you down; you have trekked through things that you would never have even thought of doing, and have even written a goddamn CAS reflection on it sometimes too!

The sweet taste of freedom is just around the corner, all we have to do is just do what we've been doing for around 20 months or so- (I don't know what you do, but somehow, I've been doing something [probably die a little bit each day] so that I haven't dropped out yet, so just keep doing it!) You have felt how amazing it is from finishing a math portfolio to completing your last science IA; now that will pale in comparison when you finish that last exam! Most of us are probably hyped for post secondary, whether it's apprenticeship, college, university, travel, whatever. These crap-filled exams are the last things in our way; finally, it's time to show these IB examiners (from hell) what we're made of of what we're made!

Hopefully, you've started to make time to study. If you haven't, (like me) then I hope you're meeting your goals then! Anything worth doing is worth doing well ;) The day where we stagger out of the classroom, finishing our last exam, laughing, half crying hysterically, unbelievably accepting the end is nigh. These are our last days; even I can't believe it; it's really going to be all over.

When exam session comes, I encourage everyone to get some sleep the day before and have some protein; and try not to cram! Try not to put any pressure on yourself, and don't compare yourself to anyone else! You can only do the best you can; don't expect more from yourself that way. By the end you'll be so happy you'd want to punch a baby feel like you've conquered everything! Great things happen to great people! As the IB chapter of your life begins to close, a new, awaits you in the next. I hope things will get better for everyone from here!

You should be proud of your accomplishments. I hope the IBS community has served you well. We are always welcoming  alumni to help out the fresh new-born dying souls who've been conscripted into the IB programme -just like you have- and give them a hand!

Good luck everyone! :)

#155235 Problems with my mom! She is afraid of being attacked by witches

Posted Alejandro Pita on Apr 03, 2012 - 16:45

"She has no worry about job-related stuff cause she has no job, she has no worries about mate case she has no mate, and many other examples."
She needs worries! She needs something to do, something to fight for. You say that her problem comes from loneliness but at the same time you wanna get away from her. She just needs to have an actual relationship with someone. Well, more like she needed it in the past. Maybe now it's too late. I'd get her proffesional help, but I seriously doubt it'll fix it. I think she should either find a job or go to some group activities, or even try to study something in university.

#151804 KONY 2012

Posted cjedd27 on Mar 07, 2012 - 04:53

If you haven't heard of Kony yet and what he is doing to innocent children, please take the time to watch this video. It's quite long, about 30 minutes, but trust me, it's worth your time. Together we can make a change to stop Kony in 2012. Please watch and share this video with everyone you know.

#155494 YouTube Review

There is a series of videos on YouTube that review the seven topics taught in Math SL.

Does anyone know what is on the syllabus that is not covered in the videos?

I don't think I have anything to add to what Leafed said, they pretty much summed up everything. I am just going to rephrase it just in case the above didn't make sense (which is unlikely).
The home page has two categories:
  • General Forum
  • IB Forum
  • The General Forum is one has nothing to do with IB and you have the sub-forums under it General Discussions, Debate and Discussion, Chat (with games and jokes), University Forum.
  • The IB Forum has more specialized sub-forums like the Sciences.

In each subforum (or call it whatever you like), there are topics or threads. The thread is obviously made up of of posts (which are what people reply), for example what you're reading now, is my post to the 'IB Suvival' topic. At the bottom of every topic page, you will have an empty field which you reply in then click post, it will come up just like what you're reading now.  At the end of the post on the right, there is an arrow going up, that's the reputation icon. If you like any post anywhere, or would like to say thank you, you click on it. Just like Leafed's post, it's very helpful so 4 people clicked on the green icon.

That's pretty much it in terms of basics. The other things come with time, and don't worry about it. I was a little confused in the beginning too.
Perhaps you didnt need all this detail, but I just gave you everything just in case you did. :)

If you have any question concerning the forum, you may ask in Mini-questions about IBS features. If there's a problem with your account or anything else, contact one of the admins (Administrators or Supervisors).

I dont get how this site works.

It's a forum, a forum is a different type of social networking that has been around long before facebook and Myspace. This site wasn't, but the format this site uses has been. There are different levels of conversation that can go on.

On the main menu you have all of the categories when you scroll down and within those categories you have boards. Click on the board that most interests you and once you do that, you will be able to view all of the topics that relate to each board. Click on the topic and simply send a response to the conversation at hand. OR if you are feeling really outgoing, try making a new topic.

That's the 101 on the forum, once you get your way around everything becomes a fun place, you have peoples profiles, messages, moods, signatures....all kinds of stuff. Message me if you have any questions! I'm also willing to bet the staff here also would help probably better than I could as well.

What do you mean you don't get how this site works?

If you have a question, you can post a question in the appropriate forum (not the first one you come to, as this obviously as nothing to do with debate and discussion) and someone will respond to you as best as they can. It may take a few hours-several days depending on the type of question asked but most are answered pretty quickly. You can respond to questions by clicking "reply" and submitting a post. You can edit your profile if you want by hitting "settings" and then can customize post options, your information, etc. And you can download files if you are earn VIP membership or purchase a VIP subscription. Files include notes, sample essays, past IAs, and past extended essays.

I don't see what's so hard about that.

So it could vex a generation of over-analysing IB do-no-gooders into insanity from this open to interpretation conundrum that lied before them.

#132567 General math learning, studying, and reviewing tips?

Posted Trololol Marf on Sep 23, 2011 - 02:37

Looks like you got it all. You said you understand the concepts right? The hardest part is already taken care of.

PRACTISE. Study often. Read the examples and take notes. That's all there is to it.

In general, I devise my own ways of solving problems, in IB1 I have even created my own notation for doing homework. But it is important to pay attention in class and learn the teacher's method. Some strategies you might want to consider are:

Looking at the question in another perspective
Working backwards
Draw a picture, make a chart, do what is comfortable for you to analyze the problem
Writing out all your knowns and unknowns (its easier to see)
Write out the equations you might be using
If it's algebra, you need to practise interpreting scenarios into corresponding expressions and equations

You haven't really given anything specific about what your doing, so that is just general advice. It all really depends what subject it is for me to study. I don't really have any fancy techniques, and I did fine in Math. Keep in mind though, you must understand and not memorize. One of my queer strategies however, involved remembering specific examples, which helps serve as a base to for me to carry out the concepts of problems that I'm not familiar with.
