#80440 Interview the person below you

Posted Bishup on Sep 18, 2010 - 17:46

ME TOOO  :D
Patrick is too god for Sandy so he scorned her pathetic personality but he was in it just for the occasional sex.
BTW I have no idea who Patrick and Sandy are.

How many times a weak do you release your sexual tension?

#78939 Has anyone ever done a Math EE b4?

Last year a guy at my school did his EE in maths. He ended up with 45 points on his dimploma...

#79847 HL Chemistry Potential Fail!

Posted Tilia on Sep 13, 2010 - 14:55

It took me quite a while to understand the stoichemistry stuff as well. But I can recommend this: It's what helped me understand what on Earth a mole was! However, stoichemistry is a very small topic and the others are very different, but you'll have to be able to apply m=nM and such formulae in those topics as well.
Chemistry is fascinating, in my opinion. I just loved it, even though there were some things I had trouble with and still find a bit odd. So just calm down, try to learn what you didn't know and see how you find chemistry when you've come to the other topics. Another thing you could do is to ask an older student to help you with chemistry as service.

#78704 IB Biology HL -- biodiversity lab ideas?

Posted JoeGuff on Sep 05, 2010 - 18:02

I did a very similar lab on biodiversity for my Group IV project. Me and my entire IB class was assigned to do a project on biodiversity, and we collected large amounts of data about areas in a river in our city. Variables collected included water pH, temperature, seagrass coverage (measured by using a transect), wind, wave height, etc. Then we used large nets to collect sea life in our areas, and identified the species of each animal before releasing them into the wild. After this, we measured the biodiversity of the river, and every team was required to send their data to a massive data pool. We calculated biodiversity as our dependent variable, and then retroactively chose our dependent variable.
I'm not advising that you do the exact same experiment I did (Plagiarism lol) but you can do something similar. :(

Also, you can always try to do something with the amount of Pollutant/Chemical X in an ecosystem, and then measure it's affect on the biodiversity of Plant life in an ecosystem.

With biodiversity, the labs are always going to be quite similar, as it's always going to affect plant and animal life, (unless you decide to focus on the microscopic) so just try to choose an independent variable that is able to be measured.

P.S. Wildlife Field Guides are a great help when identifying species in the wild. They shouldn't be that expensive, and your local library/school might have a few.

#75757 Longest Books Ever Read

Posted Ruan Chun Xian on Aug 20, 2010 - 01:27

View PostSandwich, on Aug 10, 2010 - 10:41, said:

I'm going to be controversial and say that I don't think it's an achievement to read a long book.

I think it's an achievement to plough through a book which is as dull as ditchwater. It doesn't necessarily matter about its length -- although these are the only sorts of books where the more content you have, the higher the factor by which overall boredom is multiplied. This is therefore the only circumstance where a longer book might be a greater achievement than a shorter book... and by achievement, I mean proud display of masochism :D Personally I've never liked being masochistic, so would prefer to replace 'achievement' with 'dubious personal choice' and leave it at that!
Haha true. I consider it an achievement that I actually eventually read all of Heart of Darkness which bored me to tears while I was supposed to read it for IB and never actually finished it for IB. I really didn't feel any better for having read HoD. I have a passionate dislike for that book, even though I understand all the fuss around it and why people consider it great literature (and it is).

Possibly my greatest display of masochism must had been to plough through the entire Twilight series.

In all seriousness? I don't really pay attention to how long the book is, because if it's a good book (by which I mean I enjoy it and get really into it) then I would get through it in one night if I have that time. So the long and short of it is that I don't remember what the longest book I ever read was.

#74077 Arabs..muslims?

Posted Antantoon on Aug 02, 2010 - 13:40

Theyre awesome as a half palestinian Christian, the arabs can be the coolest people. Two of my best friends are Egyptian and the Saudis are so much fun  Of course there are the bad apples in all different cultures and it makes me sick what some people do. I believe classifying the Arabs as Muslims isnt right as one who isnt there are other religions apart from Muslims who are Arab.

However the Palestinians fighting against the Israelis, even though its probably not helping the current situation I fully understand why they are doing it. Our land was robbed away and were made second class citizens, to me sounds like colonialism. If any other country were doing it they would be publically disgraced but for some reason the Israelis are allowed to get away with it. The Jews and the Arabs lived peacefully before 1945 I believe giving them a country wasnt right because it took the land of people who have been living there for generations. Personally i dont get scared if I see a muslim on a plane with the burqa and other forms because Ive been on Lebanese Airlines and Royal Jordanian and I wouldve been terrified :P

#75255 Ground Zero Mosque

Posted Rue on Aug 15, 2010 - 14:12

Calling it the "ground zero mosque" in the first place is ridiculous. It's TWO WHOLE BLOCKS away from Ground Zero plus it's an Islamic commuity centre. It's being built on the site on an old coat factory, hardly "hallowed ground" now. Plus, there is already a mosque four blocks away from Ground Zero. Where's the line? Two blocks away is too much, but four is ok? How many grains are in a heap of sand?

Secondly, and even more importantly, lets look at the first amendment of the American constitution. It says "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." Furthermore, in a letter he wrote shortly after becoming president, Thomas Jefferson wrote "Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his God, that he owes to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legislative powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with solemn reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between Church and State." America is supposed to be a country of freedom. Look at the first settlers, they came to America to escape religious persecution in their own countries. You cannot tell people where they can or cannot congregate under the name of their religion. We have to ask ourselves, if it was a church, synagogue, temple etc being built there would there be a controversy? No, I expect not. Yet there is with this Islamic building, which is a violation of the fundemental right of religious freedom. I'm absolutely appalled that this is even happening, I think it's terrible. Of course 9/11 is a massive deal and of course the pain is not going to go away. But how exactly does this help? Al Quaeda is NOT Islam, just a tiny tiny tiny tiny little faction of extremists who have values which are way different from the teachings of Islam. In the wake of such a disaster do we really want to alienate and discriminate against a religion? Now, we should be promoting peace, tolerance and inclusion in memory of all those people who lost their lives.

Thanks for your help.

#75235 Ground Zero Mosque

Posted Sandwich on Aug 15, 2010 - 11:11

My opinion is that I can hardly believe this debate even exists. It's like saying that you can't build a Church in the town where the Klu Klux Klan lived. Serious, fundamental error of squaring millions and millions of reasonable muslims who have every right to practice their faith with approximately, what, twelve(?) suicidal fundamentalist maniacs from a different country who died roughly 10 years ago now.

That there is opposition to this mosque is, in my opinion, completely ridiculous. Not only are you penalising millions of totally normal reasonable people for the actions of some total crazies, but you're also acting in a way which is discriminatory, antagonising, stereotyping and insulting towards those muslims. It's picking them out and basically saying to them: you and your religion are not welcome here.

To be perfectly frank, if there was any way to confirm the fact that everything the US does is part of a religious hate-war (as many fundamental muslims believe and indeed are inspired to commit acts of terrorism by) it would be to take such a vindictive and discriminatory action against a religious group.

It doesn't even require forgiveness and reconciliation, because the people who are going to use the mosque and want it built aren't anything more to do with the people who committed the acts of 9/11 than I am to do with Neo-Nazis just because I'm white. It's the worst kind of stereotyping, to say that a whole group is evil because of the actions of a very few and then somehow use hurt feelings to justify reducing the rights of those citizens. If I'm not very much mistaken, that's how Hitler vilified the Jews.

There is a mosque right by King's Cross St. Pancras and one at Edgware Road, and if anybody wanted to chain themselves to some railings or go on hunger strike, I say let them. Pretty sure it wouldn't take too long before they were in McDonalds being served by a muslim guy behind the check-out. If they get a taste of their own medicine, perhaps he'll refuse to give them ketchup because it reminds him of his family killed by an Allied Bomb in Afghanistan to see red on an Englishman's hands. Good grief, is all I can say!

This kind of petty stuff makes me really angry. Yes something terrible has happened. No, unrelated people do not need to suffer for it just because some people can't mentally sort fundamentalist craziness from the normal people in the street. If they want to create a centre for 'terrorist activities', they can do so far more efficiently in a house frequented only by themselves than in a public place of worship where they'll be surrounded by tourists and the reasonable majority.

#75168 Criticism vs. Critique

Posted Sandwich on Aug 14, 2010 - 22:01

To my understanding, criticism = solely negative feedback.
A critique = all feedback, both positive and negative. So more like a reflection of the whole thing than just a reflection of the negative.

So Bob number 1 would object to society's understanding of chickens flying, and Bob number 2 might provide a balanced view of what he reckons to society's understanding of flying chickens. In my opinion both Bobs have issues, but there we have it

#75079 How to Improve in Mathematics SL during the summer?

Posted Sandwich on Aug 13, 2010 - 17:03

A lot of other people have said you should do exercises which help you remember the concept, however this works only for those people who do not suffer from the bizarre phenomenon of mathematical amnesia. I do!

Personally I have the ability to do a mathematical problem 10+ times perfectly on Monday morning and have forgotten entirely how to do it by Tuesday lunchtime to the extent that the whole thing has gone from being comprehensible to looking like some terrible unknown nonsensical code and, to be frank, scares me.

I even forgot how to integrate and differentiate in my actual exam having been doing nothing but solid integration and differentiation perfectly for at least three days leading up to and including the hours/minutes/seconds before I went into the exam room. SEVERE mathematical amnesia, I tell you! I also forgot how to do matrices, but we'll skip that...

If, like me, you can't remember a blasted thing within hours of having understood and done something perfectly, I wouldn't recommend practising on past questions at this stage. You might end up remembering the answers for when you actually do need the practice... but failing to know how to do it. I suggest doing a few past questions and, once you've got the hang of it, writing out your thought process completely to show yourself how you came to that conclusion, what all the exceptions are and what all the strange little rules are. I find that being able to read that kind of thing again (very slowly XD) brings it all flooding back  Save all of the crazy practice questions for just before the exam when they're most likely to stick in your mind (if they ever will :( ).

Via this technique I turned my predicted 4 into a 6 for the real thing, despite forgetting entire topics in the exam! ;) Possibly this only applies for people with mathematical amnesia. I am very convinced that it is a true condition, because I otherwise have a pretty good memory o__O; Or maybe part of my brain got squished when I was a child, who knows.

What's the difference between UK and Great Britain?

Great Britain is technically speaking the big island consisting of England, Scotland, Wales and associated mini islets (e.g. Isle of Man, Isle of White, Channel Islands etc.). The United Kingdom is short for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, so it's the island of Great Britain plus Northern Ireland. The UK is the official one registered as a country, and goes on all of the passports etc. Also some people in Northern Ireland will refer to themselves as British :( So nobody observes the distinction with any great rigour, hence why it's confusing. In fact it's so confusing, I'm 99% sure I'm right but might be slightly inaccurate in any one of those particulars without realising! D:

#74683 Aprehensive about my IB Choices

Posted IOwnAndPwnU on Aug 08, 2010 - 22:11

First off, I strongly recommend you take at least Standard Level Mathematics. Math Studies, in my honest opinion, is a waste of time and is looked down upon by many (if not all) universities. In essence, Math Studies is for those with NO mathematical ability whatsoever. That doesn't sound like you, so please switch over to SL Math, you'll thank yourself later. Besides, don't you feel kind of ashamed taking such a low level course.

As for Chinese, that course should be fine since you seem interested in learning new languages. However, may I recommend learning a bit before September so that you can make sure you don't hate it. This way, if you find out you hate the language, you can always switch to French or Russian.
