I didn't read either book, so I can't really help you with the details.
But in general, to write a good piece, try to follow the guidelines here, they are helpful: click here
The most important thing is that you write about something you find interesting. Although you have a limited time, but I think it's enough to write a good piece and to even edit it. If you find house imagery an interesting and engaging topic, then start right away. Try to cover points from both works equally, and to explain your point thoroughly.
