Physics EE - Is this topic too broad?

Sep 18, 2011 - 14:44

Hello!

I was thinking of looking at how various factors that affect the average rate of temperature increase of electrical wire. (Power, AC/DC current, voltage versus current, material that the wire is made out of, spacing of the wires) Is this topic too broad? How would you suggest I narrow it? Because looking at something like power and rate of temperature increase is far too narrow. Also, instead of looking at rate of temperature increase I could look at maximum temperature reached, but I think there would be less to do with that one. What do you think?

Physics extended essay related to electronics?

Sep 07, 2011 - 01:52

Hello all!

I'm around the time at my school where I should start writing my extended essay very soon. I was thinking of doing it about something with electricity, but when my physics teacher found out how much electronic stuff I do on my own time, he really believes that I should do something related to electronics. I'm not looking for specific topic suggestions in electronics. What I'm really asking is for a general idea of some of the types of things you could investigate with electronics, because I don't see any good types of things to do with electronics really. What do you guys think?

Actually one thing that just popped into my head just as I was writing this was looking at the efficiency of some kind of electronic part with temperature or something. Maybe even looking at the effects of exceeding or approaching the maximum power rating of a resistor and how the effects the resistance. But I suppose a lot of that type of stuff would be on the data sheet (like temperature deviation as a function of the ambient temperature in thermistors). Also, you could argue that some of that stuff is more in the domain of engineering.

Could that be a general type of extended essay topic? Does anyone have any other ideas of general things to investigate? Thanks for your time!

EDIT: I apologize. I just realized that this was probably the incorrect place to post this. Don't reply, I'll repost it in the extended essay forum. Sorry!

Unsure of whether to attempt the full diploma or not

Aug 26, 2011 - 16:22

Hello!

It is almost the end of summer and I will soon be doing my last year of high school, so I have to soon make a big decision about whether I will be doing full IB or not. The reason that I am unsure is that because of the lack of available HL courses at my school, I only have 2 HLs right now. The courses I am taking are: spanish AB intio SL, english HL, history HL, mathematics SL, physics SL, and chemistry SL. At our school, they will only offer one HL science. I was previously told that chemistry HL would be available to us, and was in a grade 11 chemistry class which taught the higher level material in the topics that we did. Near the end of our grade 11 year it turned out that most people would prefer biology HL. So, doing chemistry HL in a class with students was no longer an option. However, my science teacher has offered to do chemistry HL with me on my own, while I do the SL class with everyone else. Do you think it is something that I will be able to do on my own? I much prefer having classmates to help me, I'll be totally on my own if I do do it. I won't mind doing the extended essay. The only other thing is that I don't really want to do the action hours. But that shouldn't stop me from doing the diploma.

What do you guys think? Thanks for your time!

Using extended essay topics that are already on the internet

Jun 14, 2011 - 21:10

Hello all!

So it's that time of year at my school where everyone has to pick an extended essay topic. I have picked physics for my discipline. I was thinking about a few questions related to electricity. When I was researching online I found someone else on a forum saying that they were going to do the exact same topic that I was thinking about doing. Is it still okay to use this topic, or could having the same topic as someone else be considered plagiarism? The topic is about conductivity and temperature increase with power in materials.
