#64422 Type I -- Stellar Number

Posted sweetnsimple786 on Mar 08, 2010 - 23:53

View Postswim625qt, on Mar 08, 2010 - 17:09, said:

Ok so for the first part I got this:

n  __  #
1 __   1   ---> 1-3= 2 ---> 2-3=1
2  __ 3   ---> 3-6= 3 --->    3-4=1
3   __ 6   ---> 6-10=4    --->    4-5=1
4  __  10 --->        10-15=5
5   __ 15

But how does this help me arrive at a equation?

For the second part:

I understand that for U2=12 (2) + 13 and U3= 12 (3) + 37. But how do i turn this into an equation?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I think the method is called finite differences, so you may want to Google that. I'll try to outline it below using different numbers.

Have you heard of polynomial or quadratic sequences? The way it's been explained to me is you take the terms and find the positive difference between each consecutive term. Then you have a new list of numbers and you find the difference between each terms again, which gives a new list. Then you do the same thing again. You repeat this until you've found a list with all of the same numbers. If you get a list with all of the same numbers, then you know that there's a polynomial that will fit your sequence.

So for example

1, d+1, 2d+1, 3d+1
[take difference]
d, d, d

So that's a first degree polynomial... aka a monomial, which is what you deal with when you say an = a1 + (n-1)d, where d is the difference, because when you simplify, you get an=dn-d+a1

More complicated:
1, d+1, 3d+1, 6d+1
[take diff]
d, 2d, 3d
[take diff]
d, d
Since you've had to take the difference twice, it's a quadratic. If you had to take it thrice, the polynomial would be a cubic. And so on.

Does that help you?

  I think I get what you mean could you give me an example with numbers though if you have time. Like say hexagonal numbers 1,6,15,28,45..... if you break them down it comes to 5,9,13,17,21 ..... and if you break that down it becomes 4,4,4,4,4. But how would I find a general statment for that?

So you're looking for a quadratic for reasons mentioned above in this post. The general form of a quadratic will be
an2 +bn +c= an
[where n is the nth term]

Now plug in the known values. You'll have to use three "points" (n, an) like (x,y) because you're solving for a, b, and c. So you'll create a system of equations.
Here's a couple of them w/ your hexagonal numbers:
n=1, an = 1
a + b + c =1

n=2, an=6
4a + 2b + c=6"

You can also use the point (3, 15)
9a + 3b + c = 15

Now you're just solving for a, b, and c using a system of equations.

4a+2b+c=6
- a+ b+ c=1
-----------------
3a+b=5

Now try to get another equation with no c in it.

9a+3b+c=15
-(4a+2b+c=6)
---------------
5a+b=9

so 3a+b=5
5a+b=9

Subtract one equation from the other and you get
2a=4
a=2

Now plug in your a value to find b.
5a+b=9
5(2)+b=9
b=-1

Now plug in a and b to find c
a+b+c=1
2-1+c=1
c=0

so the equation would be 2n2 - n = an

Does that help you?

Then you are not so smart for enrolling yourself without knowing. I'll give you a hint it's pre-uni academic program, you can know more about it by looking on the internet.

IB drives me crazy, but my boyfriend happens to be the only thing keeping me sane, lol. It's ridiculous.
And I like breaking some stereotypes, as he's a football jock. Luckily though, not the jerk sort.

Drones come screaming down from the sky...as fire falls down on you burning the very ground you are standing on...My heavily armored Humvees then troop up the hill(again) and thus I AM KING of da HILL.

Just in case Harry Potter comes back I put up a massive billboard on the hill, of Cho Chang saying:

"Dear Harry,
I want you're Magic Wand inside my Chamber Of Secrets.
Sincerely,
Cho Chang "

:)
Actually my friend made the above thing up...
AND I JUST HAD TO SHARE IT WITH YOU GUYS!

BTW I'm still king.

I'll offer a few words of advice :);

For notes, keep a copy of the syllabus handy, and always write the entire assessment statement for what your taking notes on. Also, pay attention to the teacher notes on the last column, it should limit/define what you need to take notes on.
Also, try to answer the entire assessment statement in one location, but don't worry about copying the information from an entire handout here lol. :). For studying Biology, I usually have luck with visualizing with what's going on, structures, or whatever.
Also, if you need to, study for longer amounts of time until you feel that you know the information.

With Internal Assessments and Labs, play close attention to what the directions say. Your teacher can help you out more on this, and should be able to provide you with information on how to do IAs/Labs.

For taking notes, click4biology.info is a great online and free source that covers most of the Core topics within SL and HL.
The IB Study Guide for Biology (By Allot) is a great resource. I find that the smaller book he wrote (the green one) is much more concise and informational than the longer book he wrote. (the orange one) The books by Allot also cover all the topics and options within SL and HL.
While both of the books may be pretty expensive (About $40), but you can find it used online for about $22.

you make it seem like your not his age i thought you were like 16, 17 years old. and that would make me a freak too since i am his age and im not into porn  :D

Since the title of this thread is 'stereotype the person above you' so then I just stereotyped Austin as an American fat blob of Macdonald's fat who's addicted to porn and Halo.So no offense meant to you natalie.....

Anyhow the trained species now attack you're fortress and bring it down...and I successfully make off with all your weaponry......i then  hack into all you're bank accounts and make sure you have no more money to by any more Halo based defenses.

Now WILL YOU STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM HALO!!! NONE OF US GET THIS ****!!!
