#91408 Should I drop IB?

Posted jjmack on Dec 11, 2010 - 01:50

Get the best education you can. Period. IB is testing your intelligence, perseverance, fortitude, and brain power. Is IB going to win? Or are you going to win. Don't even THINK about dropping out. There is no chance you will feel good about yourself dropping out in 5 years or 10 years. Believe in yourself. You can do it.

#55644 Body Piercings

Posted Taigan on Aug 23, 2009 - 10:09

While I know it isn't right to judge a person based on how they look like, it's usually what I do. I usually associate a piercing with pain. It really depends where they are, though. I generally don't think much of an ear piercing. However, a piercing around the eyebrows, mouth or tongue implies (in my opinion) a tough exterior. A nose piercing doesn't really mean much (as they are more common). Tattoos also generally mean the same thing for me. Small tattoos indicate an adventurous person that likes to try new things. Larger tattoos however (which can be painful to get) seem to tell me that the person is tough (perhaps trying to look more dangerous)
I know these are stereotypes but I would be lying to you if I told you I didn't use them. Although, once a person gets to know you, they obviously mean nothing. They only count for first impressions.

#87243 Tips for A1 Individual Oral Commentary

One way to improve your unseen is to look at the unseen text the most unbiased way as possible, after you get the idea about the poem/prose, then be as biased as possible about the poet :)!. This is one great advice as being biased too early makes you wrong interpret the text easily.
I don't see how you can "wrongly" interpret any text. We don't know why the author wrote what he did so all we can do is make a convincing argument. Throw it out there if theres some good evidence, just remember to keep it in context with the book, focusing on the passage and the passage only for all interpretation will lead to stuff being pulled out of context. Can't call Hamlet a murderous psychopath because of one passage :)

#78678 TOK presentation - Is this an ok topic for TOK?

Posted tenaciousdan on Sep 05, 2010 - 13:55

The key thing is really the knowledge issue in an abstract sense. Use your real-life issue to extract the KI, then leave your example behind and float around in TOK world for 7 minutes. And at the end, apply whatever you've discussed to other real-life situations.

I did my TOK on quite an abstract topic (Identity), just touched on some real-life situations (mind uploading, brain death), and got 19/20. The key thing is really  analysing the WOKs with respect to your KI.

You could go for something along those lines:

Should culture and religion condone acts that are, by law, illegal and, by ethics, immoral?

Yeah..and in India we call it maths....but that sounds gay so we all call it math...or rather the the "TOUGHEST HL IN THE WORLD"!!! :)

two things:  firstly, calling it maths is not gay, its just what most non-americanised countries call it

secondly, by calling it gay you are suggesting it is inferior, therefore showing that you are homophobic
im not an activist but please leave homophobia of this website

#72846 General IB Knowledge - Ask mini-questions about IB here

Hey Im a 10th grader and I'll start IB as a freshman in september and since we are on summer holiday Im thinking about what can I do to get prepared for my first year in Ib diploma program? Have any ideas or any experiences that may guide me ? Thanks a lot!

Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about it, I personally feel that doing prep in the summer will just psych you out. That's just my own opinion though, many other people have different ideas and strategies that worked for them. I say listen to several different views and decide what works best, but don't feel like you will be behind if you go into the IB not knowing your material beforehand.

The students at my school that did well in English did lots of reading and writing just for fun. And if you're taking History and you're interested in that, maybe read up on the World Wars or something. I say just enjoy your summer though. Good luck to you in the IB :P

#54348 Cutting Down the Words - Read first post before asking about word count!

The coverpage is not included in the word count, but subheadings are, am I correct?

Correct. And I didn't count the title of my EE in my word count when I repeated it at the top of my introduction. The IB doesn't care if you repeat the title of your essay vefore you've even started, trust me. I just did it so the examiner wouldn't forget what my question was when he/she started reading the introduction.
