#80431 Best study method for History SL?

Posted Bishup on Sep 18, 2010 - 16:39

History is about knowing the context and the major details of the events you don't have to all the minute details you have to be able to compare and debate your points. IB history is more of an evaluation of the string of events. So what I suggest you do is you study all right wing politicians IE Hitler, Mussolini and all left wing Stalin and Lenin. Make sure you know your consolidation and rise to power. For the Wars know the consequences and the reasons for why it started. I suggest for revision you read over your notes and books and write the major events in chronological order and asses their importances so for instance Lenin's storm of the winter palace and Stalin's purges. Why were the successful etc. Memorise historian quotes and different interpretations of the events. And lastly look at past paper questions to get a feel of the type of question.

#76277 Allende or Peron?

Posted Tsubaki on Aug 22, 2010 - 18:52

While they would both probably be quite helpful to know for paper 3, (I wouldn't know, I did History of Europe) Peron would be helpful for paper 2 as well, as he appears in the Rise and Fall of Single Party States section, I believe. That is something you may wish to consider.

#71048 PEN PALS FOR CAS HOURS!

Posted Aboo on Jun 08, 2010 - 04:31

Re the chatroulette, I was being sarcastic.

CAS exists for students who would otherwise be at home studying, to go out and experience new things/talk to new people/help people/be creative/learn a new activity. It's not meant to be a lazy 150 hours or to do something you already do and count that as CAS.

Just talk explain a few experiment in depth then talk about their strengths and weaknesses mostly directed at ecological validity

Command term; Asses: Ask students to measure and judge the merits and quality of an argument or concept.  Students must clearly identify and explain the evidence for the assessment they make.

You could talk about The Stroop Effect by Stroop in 1935, about the cognitive perspective of attention and how the stroop experiment can't be applied to the outside world.

Or Ebbinghaus and memory and how remembering nonsense syllables does not apply to the outside world.

Or you can say how some experiments do apply, such as Peterson and Peterson's claim on semantic processing and longterm memory.

It depends on what stance you want to take.
Remember to claim what type of methodologies they are and use different types.

Hope this helps :coffee:

#63589 Economics: Is this article good for an IA commentary?

Posted master135 on Feb 22, 2010 - 04:06

While hurricane Katrina would have been a good point to begin searching for an article - I don't recommend it because the incident would most likely  force you to choose an article more than a year old (which IB economics does not allow). You may want to try looking for a more recent incident - for example something related to florida's orange industry situation after the recent extreme cold weather.

-You DON'T HAVE TO use numbers if the article does not have them (but use them if it does).
- Other good topics for articles relating to microeconomics can be about  to price ceilings/price floors (which is what I did mine on 2 years ago), market failure or taxation (ie. negative externalities - smoking/alcohol etc) to name a few.

Hope thatt helps

Well, doesn't the IBO make a bell curve when figuring out what grade we should get?
I thought that they make it so that most get 4-5.. but then lower and higher grades are calculated.. I mean it varies slightly every year, but grade boudaries should say quite some info to you.
Um I think masochist is right in that there's no official grading curve but the grading rubrics have very vague and subjective descriptors, like "The essay shows considerable evidence of such qualities" vs "The essay shows some evidence of such qualities" or "The essay shows clear evidence of such qualities" (I copied all of these straight from my EE rubric) so I suppose the graders can still change their ideas of "considerable evidence" since it's so relative. I've heard some rumors that "they change the grade boundaries if everyone scores too low because they're afraid that the exam was too hard" etc but I think they're just uninformed. I have also heard a rumor that the IBO made the grade boundaries more challenging between two year groups but it was about MYP so I'm not so sure if the same can apply and anyway shifting the boundaries between the years doesn't really affect our grades the way that a curve would.

... And if they had a grading curve, then why would they bother calculating all this data on grade distributions?

They also wouldn't have such huge differences in mean grade and they certainly wouldn't have subjects with mean grades of 7.00, like some of those languages.

#63489 Biology SL/HL help

Posted Hedron123 on Feb 20, 2010 - 17:55

Okay. First we'll talk about photosynthesis.
As you know, Photosynthesis is the process by which plants (algae and some bacteria too) convert light energy from the sun into chemical energy (stored as bonds in the organic compounds made --> mainly glucose) It is divided into two main types of reaction: light-dependent and light-independent reactions. The former requires a continual supply of light while the latter can be carried out in darkness (this clarifies the myth that, at night, plants are not undergoing photosynthesis; they just will not carry out the light-dependent reaction)

Having said that, let's begin with the light-dependent reaction.
This reaction is also divided into two main processes but the difference is that they take place almost simultaneously. These are: photolysis of H2O and photophosphorylation.

Chlorophyll is located in the thylakoid membranes of the chloroplast in groups of molecules called photosystems (there are two types of photosystem: 1 and 2). When chlorophyll absorbs sunlight energy, an electron within the molecule is raised to a higher energy level (the electron is said to be excited). Once this happens, chlorophyll is photoactivated. Excited electrons pass from molecule to molecule until they reach an e- acceptor at the reaction centre of photosystem II. Once here, the electron will pass along a chain of carriers in the thylakoid membrane. The flow of the electron will cause the pumping of protons into the thylakoid. Soon, a proton gradient is created (there is more protons in the fluid space inside the thylakoid than on the outside). ATP synthase (located in the thylakoid membranes) will then allow the protons to flow across the concentration gradient, using the energy released to synthethize ATP. The production of ATP by means of an excited electron from Photosytem II is non-cyclic photophosphorylation.

The light-dependent reaction is not over yet :(
Once the electron has released energy to make ATP, it passes onto Photosystem I (from Photosystem II). Photosystem I can now be photoactivated by absorbing light. When this happens, the excited electron will also travel through a short chain of carriers until it reaches NADP+ in the stroma. NADP+ accepts two high-energy electrons from the electron transport chain and one H+ ion from the stroma, forming NADPH + H+. This is good but as you may have noticed, Photosystem II has given away electrons to supply Photosystem I. Hence, PII will need to replace these electrons by means of the photolysis of water molecules. The clorophyll molecule at the reaction centre is positively charged. By means of an enzyme (at the reaction centre), water molecules in the thylakoid space are split (photolysis) into H+ and oxygen ions and electrons(the electrons are given to the positively charged chlorophyll). Both oxygen and H+ are by-products of this breaking down of water molecules. Oxygen is a waste product and is excreted (think of the equation for photosynthesis).

For the light-independent reaction you must have a diagram in order for me to explain. Tell me if you do have one or I'll try to find one to complete my explanation. I hope all of what I've said is useful!

G'luck :(

#51680 Contemporary History IA 2009 HELP!

Posted buccaneer247 on Jul 08, 2009 - 23:02

Ok. Ive been working all summer and finally decided to start my summer assignments and realize that two of them are HL IAs. Not a big deal other than school starts in a couple of weeks and I haven't started either of them, my EE, or my CAS project. I am totally screwed and need some help. Plus the teacher's instructions are complete crap and make no sense. After reading some other posts I am in between on what to do. So what do these instructions mean and is this even a complete IA. Thanks for any help. 8@

#50902 ToK Presentation - Knowledge Issues?

Posted rAiiNaa.xx on Jun 27, 2009 - 00:50

My TOK Presentation topic is: "To what extent can we trust the media?" and I need some help with finding Knowledge Issues...
I had talked to my TOK teacher about it and she just said to look up the syllabus and stuff for help... but it isn't really helping me~

Anyone got any suggestions with a possible knowledge issue that could get me started?

Since this sin't your final IA, I guess it's okay if you psot it on here, but be aware that someone might plagiarize it and submit it for their own IA in November/next May. In which case, if you decide you want to use the same IA for your final one, you'll be accused of plagiarism. Not smart to post your work on public forums.

I personally think your question would be better if you asked "To what extent were Cavour's and Garibaldi's efforts to unify Italy successful?", because Italy wasn't really united even after 1861. The north and South were very separate, and Garibaldi/Cavour had only intended to bring together Northern Italy and exclude the South. So there were lots of failures (economic ones, with the north being richer than the south and so on). Then you can talk about how they united Italy, and what the effects of that wre (cause and effect is always good to discuss in history).

#50505 TOK Presentation, Help!

Thanks,  DeStijl, that is what I intend to do, My TOK presentation topic was teenage relationships and social stigma, I had done a lot of ground of work and preparation with my partner. The problem is that it does not just feel right for both of us about this topic, talking to our TOK teacher, she said we can still change it, so I thought I just post it here to get some ideas for a head start. I have done deceptive advertising but again it is drifting away from the point is. And I apologize   sweetnsimple786, if you thought I was asking framed statements for TOK Topics, then you might have mistaken. I was just expecting some ideas about general tok ideas or anything of that sort to help me come up with a topic. But anyways thanks. Abortion became unrealistic as clinics were unable to provide info. Thanks to both of you anyways. I think I'll do some read up of the newspapers and see what comes to mind. But honestly, I think the idea is something that will just strike me, I have done a lot of brainstorming, but nothing and I cannot do mediocre work, so I'm waiting for that moment. Thanks again you guyz.
