#79759 Can I still get the IB Diploma?

Posted JoeGuff on Sep 12, 2010 - 23:20

Seeing as you're taking your exams in 2013, you shouldn't be in the Diploma Program yet, so you don't have to worry about that right now. If your school doesn't offers secondary languages as "ab initio" (I hope I spelled that right XD) then I would recommend switching into a language class that will be offered when you will be in the Diploma Program.

Also, when you do choose your classes for the DP, the school will assure that you pick a second language.

As always, contact your Guidance Counselor/IB coordinator for help with your schedule.

Good luck with IB.

#78716 Is it reasonable to believe something because an expert told you?

Posted Daedalus on Sep 05, 2010 - 19:57

Yeah here's where some really stupid arguments arise. For example one of my relatives is a Scientologist  but whenever I question him about his beliefs, i.e. suggesting the statistics and studies that 'prove' scientology are all put forth by scientology, he replies something along the lines of this: if you want your car fixed, do you ask a scientist or a car mechanic? And that's the problem with asking experts in their fields, of course the straightforward reasonable answer is that usually it's correct - but only usually. The expert in Christianity is the Pope, but that doesn't mean you must trust him when he begins a speech like 'God is everywhere and everything, and also nothing at all. God is in our hearts and in our minds and in our souls...'

This is why I detest ToK. You have to delineate on paper for paragraphs and paragraphs arguments that are essentially stupid. If you had a little ToK debate every time you needed to make a decision you would come to the conclusion, without fail, that 80% of the time your common sense is right and 20% of the time it isn't. Sometimes I really wish they introduced a proper philosophy course or at least something with a bit of merit rather than this sanctimonious BS.

#75235 Ground Zero Mosque

Posted Sandwich on Aug 15, 2010 - 11:11

My opinion is that I can hardly believe this debate even exists. It's like saying that you can't build a Church in the town where the Klu Klux Klan lived. Serious, fundamental error of squaring millions and millions of reasonable muslims who have every right to practice their faith with approximately, what, twelve(?) suicidal fundamentalist maniacs from a different country who died roughly 10 years ago now.

That there is opposition to this mosque is, in my opinion, completely ridiculous. Not only are you penalising millions of totally normal reasonable people for the actions of some total crazies, but you're also acting in a way which is discriminatory, antagonising, stereotyping and insulting towards those muslims. It's picking them out and basically saying to them: you and your religion are not welcome here.

To be perfectly frank, if there was any way to confirm the fact that everything the US does is part of a religious hate-war (as many fundamental muslims believe and indeed are inspired to commit acts of terrorism by) it would be to take such a vindictive and discriminatory action against a religious group.

It doesn't even require forgiveness and reconciliation, because the people who are going to use the mosque and want it built aren't anything more to do with the people who committed the acts of 9/11 than I am to do with Neo-Nazis just because I'm white. It's the worst kind of stereotyping, to say that a whole group is evil because of the actions of a very few and then somehow use hurt feelings to justify reducing the rights of those citizens. If I'm not very much mistaken, that's how Hitler vilified the Jews.

There is a mosque right by King's Cross St. Pancras and one at Edgware Road, and if anybody wanted to chain themselves to some railings or go on hunger strike, I say let them. Pretty sure it wouldn't take too long before they were in McDonalds being served by a muslim guy behind the check-out. If they get a taste of their own medicine, perhaps he'll refuse to give them ketchup because it reminds him of his family killed by an Allied Bomb in Afghanistan to see red on an Englishman's hands. Good grief, is all I can say!

This kind of petty stuff makes me really angry. Yes something terrible has happened. No, unrelated people do not need to suffer for it just because some people can't mentally sort fundamentalist craziness from the normal people in the street. If they want to create a centre for 'terrorist activities', they can do so far more efficiently in a house frequented only by themselves than in a public place of worship where they'll be surrounded by tourists and the reasonable majority.

#74166 Twilight series: Good literature?

Posted Windstorm G-man on Aug 03, 2010 - 14:03

She writes horribly. Most of it reads as if she was replacing every second word with one she found in a thesaurus, as if the use of 'fancy' words constitutes good reading.
There are consistency problems, too. All the rules Meyer creates for her vampires are broken by the end of the series.

Honestly, it is the worst thing I've ever read or even heard of in my life.

IB students should definitely not be reading this.
Pick yourself up a copy of Candide instead.

#72458 Do you cheat?

Posted IOwnAndPwnU on Jul 02, 2010 - 12:49

As the saying goes, by cheating you are just cheating yourself.

IMHO cheating is pointless because all the tests and exams are completed individually, so you might as well learn how to do the work yourself. Additionally, some people cheat on assignments because they are unsure of themselves, and this hesitation may continue into their exam, producing a negative effect on their overall mark.

If you can cheat flawlessly on the exam, go ahead, but if you get that 7, can you really say its yours? I kind of think of it like that, I want all my marks to be earned.

#64012 Twilight series: Good literature?

Posted teresad on Mar 01, 2010 - 11:24

I think it is terrible.

I cannot for the life of me understand why in the world people like this trash!
Perhaps, I have a "snob" taste of literature but I think Twilight is terrible.

In my opinion, it is badly written, shows little talent for writing, the vampire concept is completely ignored
which is understandable since the book is written by a mormon which has no prior knowledge of vampires.

I didn't manage to read the full book, but what I read, was terrible enough.

If you guys want REAL vampire litterature, I urge you to check out Anne Rice.

Also, I use recreational "drugs". I smoke weed at least 5 times a week, and it doesn't affect my schoolwork at all, and still even though I smoke weed eevery day I still did better than most of my class-mates who do not use "drugs". Then again, marijuana isn't a drug.
I thought drugs were defined as addictive, harmful, and enjoyable (in some sense) and shouldn't that include marijuana?

View PostGrumps, on Jun 30, 2010 - 00:35, said:

I have the opposite problem. No one in my IB classes will go out and have fun. Drinking and doing drugs is just sad if you're by yourself. All anyone in my classes do is study, procrastinate, and watch Glee.
I know I'll sound like a really boring, dull person now, but isn't it possible to have fun without drugs/alcohol?
