Biology EE on physiology a good idea?

Apr 18, 2012 - 12:12

Hi guys, I'm looking to do a biology extended essay about physiology (not sure exactly which organisms yet) and I was looking for tips from anyone who may have done something similar.

How narrow should I go? One species? One genus? etc. or just one aspect of any of those? I am thinking possibly Marsupial reproduction (advantages and disadvantages of short-gestation birthing, radically different sexual organs etc.) and how it benefits a species (I was thinking of red kangaroos) but I don't know if that's too narrow?

Have any of you done one before?

Is it something to avoid?

thanks :)

What constitutes homophobia?

Apr 16, 2012 - 18:58

Now hear me out, I understand that this is a topic very close to a lot of people, and something which people can find understandably offensive, but I think that there is a good discussion here so long as everybody remembers that this is just a discussion and nobody intends anything personally.

Is it homophobic or offensive to use the word 'gay' in a non-negative portrayal? if two people of the same sex were to be in a photo in which they were to be in what could be considered a fairly close embrace, smiling away, appearing to be romantically associated, would it be homophobic for one of the people in the picture to make comment and say that they look "like a gay couple"? Would merely the implication that gay couples can be so easily stereotyped be homophobic? would the use of the word 'gay' in that context be homophobic? would it be more homophobic for the other person to read into the use of the word gay as an automatic negative implication, and say that the other person is being homophobic?

I was having this discussion with a few friends recently, and I personally don't think it's a homophobic remark, and that reading into the word gay as an automatic negative is far more homophobic, but I've tried to think up some logical counter-arguments. What do you think?

EE relevance to further study? EE in a subject I'm not taking?

Dec 16, 2011 - 13:55

Hi guys, I'm trying to think of some ideas for my EE (I know it's quite early, but I'd like to have an idea of what I'm doing) and I came to a few questions I couldn't answer.

Firstly, I was wondering if it's a good idea to relate my EE to something I'd like to carry on with at uni.

Secondly, I'm very interested in biology, but it's not one of my subjects. Is there a problem with doing it for my EE? I'm looking at natural sciences at uni, and I'm veering towards the biological side (the first year is the same for the physical sciences as well though, so I don't have to decide yet) and seeing as I'm already doing HL chemistry and physics, displaying knowledge of biology would be a good idea? Ideally I'd love to work in education, research and conservation (for now, knowing me that will change in a few weeks...) whether that's geology or zoology or whatever, so I'd imagine that an essay about conservation would be a good idea?

thanks

Copenhagen

Dec 09, 2011 - 17:01

Hi guys, a few friends and I are looking to visit Copenhagen for a few days in April, and we were wondering what any locals or recent visitors would recommend doing while we're there! Tivoli Gardens looks pretty fun, but we're on a tight budget, so maybe not. We'll be staying in a hotel or hostel very close to the town centre and we'll be there for 3 days. anything we just have to see? Anything we definitely shouldn't waste our time or money on? Thanks :)
