Firstly, I would cut the ad-hominems if I were you, particularly when they're based off of completely ungrounded assumptions. I highly doubt there's anybody who's never experienced hate towards them; and if there were I certainly do not count within their ranks by any approximation. I've been hated on, to extents that psychologists called acute trauma and even clinical depression, I grew through that and got over it.

Targeted abuse is quite different from freedom of expression. What's your argument, that everybody should be perpetually censored in order to offset the chance that they may offend somebody? Are we to introduce the Orwellian concept of thoughtcrime?

The same applies to the idea of employer discrimination. Are you saying that an employer does not have the right to choose who they do or do not wish to accept as an employee? Seems quite ridiculous, considering that it is their time and money they would be investing in doing so.

Any debate involves the promotion and attempts at justifying views, asking me to hide my views simply because they are not in accord with yours is patently ridiculous. In any case, you would be guilty of the very same offence.

If we are all equal, how do you justify vilifying individuals simply for holding a different viewpoint? If we were all truly equal, would we not all think the same way and hold the same viewpoint, anyway? Each human is a unique individual.

#157229 How is our final grade decided?

Posted Summer Glau on Apr 21, 2012 - 00:02

The gods of IB math have the final say on your grade.

So make burnt offerings to them, worship their picture 3x a day at minimum, chant, etc. Whatever it takes.

Your paper 1, 2 and IA grades will be scaled to give you a total score out of 100. To scale your individual scores, you have to multiply each of your assessments by a certain number (the IB grade boundaries will tell you which numbers) and add them up to give you a total out of 100. So if you got 73/90 on paper 1, 82/90 on paper 2, and 25/40 on your IA, multiply 73 by 0.444, 82 by 0.444, and 25 by 0.5. Then add those up which will give you a total out of 100. Then check the grade boundaries to see what grade out of 7 the total corresponds to.

So...
72*0.444 = 31.968
82*0.444 = 36.408
25*0.5 = 12.5

total = 80.476

That would be a high 6.You can download the IB grade boundaries for yourself in the General IB downloads section. http://www.ibsurviva...oundaries-2010/

To answer your other question: if you got a 5 on your IA, you would probably need two 7s, one low 7 and one mid-to-high 7 to get a 7 overall.

#159651 Length of A1 HL English Paper Two

Posted Eastcoast93 on May 08, 2012 - 15:22

i wrote my german a1hl paper 2 today- i wrote 10 pages (5 double-sides). i saw one from last year, had around 7 pages (3 1/2 double sides) and received 25/25! quality not quantity but do try to exceed 6 pages

#159624 Messed up the cover page.... :P

Posted albuhay on May 08, 2012 - 10:34

I believe that the IB will just go for the first two questions that they see, so whichever two you answered first will be graded.

I wouldn't worry too much about it now, what's done is done and all that :) I'm sure you'll be fine!

#159609 IB next year!

Posted sarahlouise on May 08, 2012 - 06:26

Seriously, just relax. ALL THE TIME.

I thought that I'd try to get started on stuff, but really you have to actually start the program to know what's involved, and aside from reading A1 books beforehand there's not much that's overly worthwhile doing. Enjoying your last holidays for two years is probably what I'd do if I could go back.

#159566 Best/efficient way to organize notes for revision

Posted blenderer on May 07, 2012 - 20:28

I would advise you to work out the major themes of each novel and then pair up the novels that have a common theme (e.g. 2 books that discuss the importance of religion). After all, in the exam you're asked to compare two literary works rather than analysing one, and usually the questions ask about the themes. Then, if we continue the example of the role of religion, you go through the novels one by one and ask yourself:

WHAT?
- What does the theme of religion mean in the context of this novel? Why is it significant in the novel?
WHERE?/WHEN?/WHO?
- Where or when is the role of religion discussed in this novel? Point out specific examples. Write down one or two of the most important quotes that discuss religion. How are the (major) characters involved? Who says this, who says that? Why?
HOW?
- Symbols/motifs/diction/style etc. that emphasize the the author's point about the role of religion. Don't just point them out but explain what is their effect.
WHY?
- Why is the role of religion discussed in this novel? What is the message the author wants to convey?

When you have done this for both of the novels, compare these points and point out the similarities and differences.

So now you have basically formed the main structure for a comparative essay, minus the introduction and conclusion. My point is that don't just concentrate on individual novels but see how two novels are connected, because at least to the best of my knowledge in P2 you're always required to answer a question based on "at least two novels". And also, don't deal with themes, imagery, characters, etc. as separate things but rather as a whole.

Hope this helps, good luck!

Before I wish you guys luck:

1. The topics you start are invisible until a staff member approves it. Therefore, do not start another topic when you can't see yours. No discussions via PMs before the 24-hour wait is up. Yes, we can check PMs. For more information: Is your post not showing up after you've posted it?

2. General exam inquiries are allowed anytime. Do not discuss any exam question/topic. Do not start a topic whenever you have a general inquiry. First check the Conduct of the Examinations topic to see if it has what you're looking for: Conduct of the Examinations. If not, then you may ask your question in the following topic: General Exam Inquiries

3. If you feel IBS may distract you during examinations, you may request a temporary suspension. You just have to PM me or Sandwich the dates. For example: From the 5th to the 7th. For more information on temporary suspension: Exam ban on request

Why has the topic about HL-Math P1 disappeared? The 24 hour -rule was respected, so I can't see any reason why it would have been deleted?

It wasn't deleted but unapproved until 6 pm GMT because that's our agreed 24 hour rule.

"We will be calculating discussion time according to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). As the IB dictates that morning exams cannot end later than 13:00 and afternoon exams cannot end later than 18:00, we will be using these times to calculate your discussion start time. This means, for all morning exams, discussions will begin at 13:00 GMT of the day after the exam. Similarly, with afternoon exam, discussions will begin at 18:00 GMT of the day after the exam."

#156603 Tell on a cheater or let it slide?

Posted Wykked Wytch on Apr 14, 2012 - 00:21

I would definitely tell. Even if their actions don't hurt you, there is the definite possibility that in college and university will hurt the chances of other students who don't have to resort to dishonesty. The students who get into colleges and universities should deserve to be there on account of their hard work and intelligence, not by bluffing their way through the system. If you cheat on tests instead of studying for them the honest way, then you do not actually learn anything. Cheating starts a self-perpetuating cycle that is very hard to break out of. It's best that you call him on it as early as possible, before he gets into college where academic malpractice carries very serious consequences.

And I'm personally dismayed to see people essentially defending a liar. One would think that students in the IB program, which stresses study and hard work, would know better than to condone sheer laziness. Protip: If you can't stay in the IB program without resorting to cheating, you probably shouldn't in it.

#157120 7 on IB Philosophy? Markschemes?

Posted Crazy Gemini on Apr 19, 2012 - 05:17

Don't just go on sparknotes, chances are you will need to know your book much much better than they can ever teach you on sparknotes. And no you don't get points for name dropping, not really

Markscheme: knowledge /5 (how well you know the piece)
Expression /5 (how clearly you're writing)
Relevance /10 (have you chosen material that is relevant to the question etc.) (not 100% on this one, might need to check it)
Evaluation /10 (how effectively have you evaluated arguments)

In the image attached is a vector diagram with the 'connecting'/derived vector being the hypotenuse. you will notice that as the vectors Pini and Pfinal are facing away (not nose to tail) this is vector subtraction.
I'm confused as I drew the 'connecting' vector the otherway around (nose at the y axis) as compared to the one in the markscheme, will this make a logically equivalent  vector or not? :S
It depends on the question. If the vector subtraction is Pfinal minus Pini, the connecting vector is shown in the correct direction in your diagram. If the nose were at the y axis, the vector would be Pini minus Pfinal.

#157045 What sources can I use for EE in English?

Posted Tony Stark on Apr 18, 2012 - 09:28

Sparknotes and Wikipedia are not explicitly disallowed, but are looked down upon. Most likely result of relying on them would be losing a mark or two in holistic judgement (of course they're not gaining you any marks in depth of research, either).

Critical reviews of your work online are a basic one, other than that if it's a classic or well-known work there probably will be books published on it. You can search for secondary research on the particular genre or literary feature/technique(s) you're focusing on, too. Decent places to start include Google Books and Google Scholar. A handy trick is to read the Wikipedia article on whatever you wish to research and visit its own citations for more info.
