Tough! Okay, maybe not that harsh, but basically: you have to find a topic yourself as this is something you are assessed on. We will happily critique the topics you've found, say whether they're great, rubbish or average and give you plenty of guidance if you ask for it, but we will not give you a topic to write about. It's part of your grade, not ours! Good places to start for searching your OWN topics are sites or books with notes on major themes and characters (e.g. Sparknotes!) which may inspire you. Main themes, characters and symbols are always excellent ways to start thinking about what you want to write about As a hint! You can also find tips on the tips thread.…

Tips for the A1 Individual Oral Commentary (IOC) 1. Find out how your teacher wants to play it... Okay very technically speaking the rules re: the IOC state that you should be presented with a series of envelopes each containing an extract totally unknown to you from any one of the texts/poems etc. you have studied. However, quite a large percentage of IB schools seem to be into alternative versions of the rules, including some where they will let you choose which texts they'll use and even the odd school where they let you choose your extract. Clearly if your teacher is going to let you select which novel you want to get, you're in with an advantage (and can save yoursel…

Here are some tips and suggestions for reading books (for A1 languages ) during IB. Not comprehensive; all suggestions and additions appreciated! 1. Read the books early. If possible don't leave the book reading too late... i.e. preferably before you begin working on it in school, and the first time (more about this later) if possible before the start of the school year/term. This takes some of the load off of you during the school year, when you will have homework and other time-erasing responsibilities. 2. Read the books often. In the simplest terms, more is better. There's no universally accepted 'magic number': you can read the books as many times as you want. But I'd…

Tips for the A1 Individual Oral Presentation (IOP) Skip to: Marking Criteria 1. Topics can be quite general This isn't like the World Literature papers where your question has to be absolutely dead on target. You can pick from themes, characters, symbols, sections and so on. You're at liberty to make this into something of a discussion topic and you shouldn't fret too much about what title you give to the presentation, provided you can give it a decent introduction and conclusion. Even something as simple as "the theme of Death in Book X" should be fine. Remember the IOP is pretty chilled out (which is why it's often the first thing to be tackled). 2. Use your presenting…

My classmate sent me this for tomorrows exam and I found it to be most helpful, so I wanted to share it with you guys A good way is to discuss the following for both prose and poetry: · The five W’s – What? Who? When? Where? Why? · Ambiguities · Diction · Imagery · Tone · Mood · Structure · Pattern · Voice · Syntax Prose-specific: · Plot · Narrative point of view · Characterization · Chronology (Use of time) · Setting · Paragraphing Poetry-specific: · Layout · Stanzas · Metre · Sound Organization of Time: 30 minutes – Read the passage, over and over again until you feel confident about the passage and have absorbed its contents. So I finished my IOP today, and was wondering about the markscheme and such. My teacher told us that not keeping to the time limit of the IOP would likely lose us points under organization, and was wondering how strict that was? I concluded the presentation portion of it at 10 minutes 15 seconds, is that going to get me marked down? She said that my timing was fairly good and how I reached the halfway point of my presentation right at 5 minutes, will that affect things?

Hi there, I'm taking English Literature and Slovak as my second language (but they're counting it as a "language A" course since it's self-taught) and I'm having trouble with selecting good books and preparing the right things for my final exam (and considering my exams are in May 2024 it's not looking great) Any tips or tricks for general bilingual diplomas would be much appreciated and/or book suggestions that fit the criteria of foreign authors in translation, poetry, nonfiction, etc ! (I've had trouble finding books other than prose:fiction that are included on the list of authors available) Many thanks ✨

Hello, the situation is following. I’m a Belarusian, who have moved to Poland 1,5 years ago. My Polish level is approximately B2 right now, which is enough for me to study well in Polish curriculum, but I still don’t feel comfortable on Polish Literature lessons. As for now I’m a sophomore, who is planning to start IBDP this year. If I work hard, there is a chance that by the end of the sophomore year my Polish will be on a C1 level. As it turns out, none of the IB schools in Warsaw(where I live) provides Russian A Belarusian A, so if I start IB, I would have to take Polish A. Is it a really big problem for me or should I do IB anyway? I don’t have any problems…

At the time of choosing my IB subjects, I chose Self-Taught Language A1 since I thought it would be an "easy" subject. Now I am reconsidering. As it is titled Self-Taught Language, I thought I would be studying the language itself, the grammar, the verbs etc. but now I am not sure. Is it literature? If so, is it a difficult subject? The language I chose was danish, since it is my mother tongue, but I was never taught the language properly. My comprehension is good but my writing, not so much. I am considering changing. Plus, I don't think there are many danish people in my country making it difficult to find a tutor. Should I change subjects? What positives does…

I have two Business Management teachers at school, and it's driving me crazy! Anyway, I got my IA topic approved by Teacher 1, who was actually really happy with it. And I wrote half of the IA, when Teacher 2 sweeps in and says I can't choose Target because it's a US-only retailer. I'm really, really confused. I get it's easier to get reviews and stuff if the company if bigger (the expansion of which can be a measure of size), but it's not like I'm lacking supporting documents or something. Does that mean we can't choose non-MNC companies for our SL IAs? If anyone's done an SL IA on a non-MNC, it would really help if you could just share your chosen company…

hey everyone, I'm not sure if anyone has asked this but basically I'm taking English A HL Literature and it's been so difficult. I'm really enjoying it because my teacher is really good. But I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on the course in general, like how could I improve my analytical skills and comparison essays? Has anyone gotten a 7? How? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I want to apply for Law at top UK universities, which often require 776 or 777 at HL and 40+ overall. My native language is English and I'd say that I'm above average at studying pure literature. I'm having a lot of trouble picking between the english courses. I need to get a high score (preferably a 7). I'm also taking HL History and HL economics and I'm worried that taking Lit HL might be overwhelming for me. Do universities prefer Lit HL over Lang lit HL? I have to make the decision soon.

The title says it all. I take English A Language and Literature Standard level. I have always struggled in Criteria A and B (understanding of the book and formulating an argument). Are there any tips you guys have? Before a test, I always try to create a good outline and re-read the book (although not very well). Yet, I still choke. Any tips? Note: I asked a similar question on Reddit, have not got any response, so hoped could get some here.

Hi, I am in year 10 this year and I have recently got my grade back for my first english reflection which I had recieved a 'C' in and the teacher had to talk to me about it. My exam is on writing a reflection but in the voice of another character in the book that I studied which is 'The Professor and the Housekeeper. I did a practice paragraph but the comments I got was that it was more of a recount not a reflection, and I'm stressed out now because I want to do good in this exam to bring up my mark. If anyone has any good tips for my reflection or just mentally please add a comment. Thank you very much!

Hi, I was just wondering about what IB would regard as too childish when it comes to choice of books to analyse for EE English A. I was thinking about children's books as some has deeper meaning that just so. On another note, I am currently doing my EE on lyrics analyses of an artists songs and looking at development throughout the albums. When it comes to this, what is important to look out for and what is important to include?

Hi, For my IOP I'm writing a poem representative of an internal monologue for a character in my novel but idk how to structure the rationale. Should I be writing about how my writing choices made the poem interesting to hear or how they communicated something about the novel or both? Is it supposed to have a thesis or something? Also, how should it be structured like has anyone's school given them a document to assist with this that they could share with me? My draft is due in like a week so any help is very much appreciated! Thanks

Hi all! First year IB teacher here. I am worried about my first year in the DP. It has been overwhelming, making me worry about many little things. My students wrote these tasks with another teacher, so I was not with them during the writing process, but I was the one to submit them.
