Also, does anybody have the list of languages available as language As? In fact, what does self-taught Literature entail? Do you need a tutor or do you teach yourself? I probably will not do a self-taught language A but it's nice to know.

My teacher is telling me that I need to add sources to support my ideas for the works in translation essay. In the past my English essays have come from my own ideas or the ideas discussed in class so I'm a bit unsure of what she means. I've tried to have a look in literary journals but I can't find any relevant sources so I'm a bit stuck. Does anyone have any suggestion for research? My novel is The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum by Heinrich Böll if that helps. Will my mark be affected if I don't use research from other sources?

Hi everyone, I am just about to start the second semester of my gr 11 year, and as such I am beginning my extended essay. I am writing on The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, and I have come up with the following question: How does the use of colours in Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief underline how Death comes to understand the dichotomy between the concepts of beauty and brutality? I would like some feedback about the broadness/narrowness of this question and if people think it is a viable EE topic with significant material to write a well-developed essay on. Thank you!

Hey, I'm new to this. If I'm posting in the wrong section, sorry! Anyways. I'm trying to think of an idea to do for my IOP. My class has an IOP every quarter of the school year. Our IOP has to be on a text that we've worked on in the 9 weeks. So far, we've worked on Mythology by Edith Hamilton and the Odyssey by Homer. I'm not sure what I want to present about- any ideas would greatly help! Thanks.

Our school is finalizing our written assignments for the IB, and we had written our reflective statements reflecting on one of the interactive orals seen that semester. However, one teacher has just notified us that we messed up, and we were supposed to reflect on TWO IO's in the reflective statement. I had not seen or heard of this anywhere, and there's another teacher at our school who doesn't think that's true. Regardless, the former teacher still holds his view that it's supposed to be reflecting on two. I really don't want to redo mine, since I only reflected on one. I'm at 389 words and can't add much more (400 max). Can anyone help clarify this issue? Thanks i…

Hi guys, I'm in my 1st year of the DP and we're going to be doing our IOP in January - so far we've done 'The Great Gatsby', 'De:TALES' and 'In Praise of Shadows'. Right now, I'm thinking of doing a presentation on how Tanizaki (author of 'In Praise of Shadows') portrayed the Japanese way of life similar to that of the way of life which is recommended in Heidegger's 'Sein und Zeit'*. I was also thinking of doing a presentation on the difference of the perception of beauty in 'The Great Gatsby' and 'In Praise of Shadows'. I'd really appreciate some help! I'm indecisive as hell and my English teacher isn't really helping me out... *I feel as if I would lose …

Hey guys, So I'm looking for a topic for my FOA and Written task. I'm wondering which parts I can use, since I already used part 4 for my written task and i can't remember about the FOA. What are the possible combinations of doing the two new ones if anyone can help me please? Also, do you have any idea where I could search for a topic since I'm really nervous that my topic would decrease my grade. Do you have any full marks examples? What is the best approach towards doing your FOA or written task, because i think that I'm doing something wrong and my teachers won't tell me? Any advice is highly appreciated, and thanks in advance.

I'm in MYP5/Grade 10 and I have to write a critical essay in English and submit it on ManageBac on Sunday. The essay topic is to write about why I chose this high school while comparing/contrasting all high school options I had before choosing that one. So it should be a 5 paragraph essay with a thesis in the introduction obviously and I should have quite some cause/effect sentences. Also max 550 words. So the thing is we had to write a rough draft for today and we would get feedback from the teacher before improving the essay for Sunday's deadline and so I wrote 840 words and my teacher said it was good, interesting but too descriptive, too wordy and it's more of a story…

Hi, So I will be giving my retake exam for Lang and Lit in Nov 2017, I will be doing this after 2 whole years! please give me some tips and pointers as to how to approach my texts and how to study for it. Also, I received a 4 the first time and I want to take it up to a 5. I received a 4 in my paper 1 and oral assessment while a 5 in paper 2 and written tasks. I missed the 5 boundary by 3 marks. Do you think by achieving a 5 in both the papers I could end up getting a 5 as my final grade? PLEASEEEE HELPPP

I've been having this problem since the start of IB1: my literature teacher doesn't let us analyze properly. The thing is, she's trying to be nice to us and not give us too much work because she knows everyone hates it (considering we were all forced into the IB program in the first place), even though our class, with the same students, last year was much more motivated and willing to work - we actually loved discussions and critical thinking and throwing ideas around. But for whatever reason our classtime has been dumbed down to just us listening to her give us summaries and partial analyses about the books (yes, summaries, because she knows nobody wants to read the book…

Hello guys, I am new both to this blog and to the IB. There is something that troubles me a lot these days on literary criticism exams that we will sit. Can we apply the principles of critical theory in our commentary, or is it not encouraged? In our class, there are not a lot of people who know critical theory and our teacher seems to encourage an in-depth examination of the literary text at hand in which we are simply building meaning from the text, as a critic with a New Critical approach would do, and as far as I know such an attitude is encouraged in normal US high schools as well. However, I do not wish to engage in such banal and aloof interpretation and wish …

Hey all! So I have to hand in a draft of my written assignment for English A SL in the coming week. Our teacher can only give us feedback this once and there after we are on our own. I understand that it counts for 25% of the grade which is a lot so I don't want to compromise on this. I was looking at the assessment criteria and it is as follows: A: Reflective statement (3 marks)B: Knowledge and understanding (6 marks)C: Appreciation of writer's choices (6 marks)D : Organization and development (5 marks)E: Language (5 marks) I don't really get C: Appreciation of writer's choices. How do I show this in my essay. In the body I have basically three …

Mixed up the dates after a crazy week, now I'm going to miss my presentation day. My teacher used a randomizer to select the order and I got put on tomorrow, but I'll be gone! My teacher said the dates are final which makes me scared, seeing how strict IB is. Should I cancel my trip (there will be a pretty heavy fine)? Or is the IOP reschedulable? Thanks.

I have my IOP coming up for ELA and I am still having some trouble to come up with solid ideas on what to say and how I should present it. I'm doing my IOP on "The Great Gatsby" with the topic "Discuss the potential that Daisy is the antagonist in the novel." I choose to talk about how Daisy’s character is controversial, as one may argue that her presence is detrimental to Gatsby’s life; therefore, Daisy is a catalyst for Gatsby demise. I have a few ideas for the subject, but I wanted to hear about other people's opinions on how she acts as the antagonist within the novel. Thank you

Hello This is my first time posting in IB survival. I'm currently beginning to write my written assignment which I have to hand in next week. I've recently moved schools, so I had two main options to write about. I studied Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Marquez in September when I began the IB, but I have not read it since I began grade 11. My other option is Agamemnon by Aeschylus, a the first instalment in a trilogy of plays written in 458 BC about the events that occur after a ten year war with a lot of feuds and some greek mythology. I have been focusing on this play at my current school so its fresher in my mind. At the moment I was thinking of writing ab…

Hello all! For my individual oral presentation for IB Literature, I am planning to give a performance based off of the book The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien. I want to do a performative-type IOP, where I will be talking from the point of view of one of the characters named Dave Jensen. The purpose of my IOP will be to explain/perform the development of his relationship with another character in the story and what that means for Jensen himself. I was a bit confused on how to do this at first, but my idea now is this: my IOP will take the form of my character writing several diary entries, each creating a near story-arc in the characters' relationship. While reading a…

Hello! So I was just wondering how it is for everyone here doing english as a language A when you're not english? I'm swedish and i've only gone to school in english for a bit over a year. My english is definitely "good enough" but I dont have a huge vocabulary, not very good with "big" words. My school offers Language A english, german, and french and I can't take german or french as I am a beginnner in those languages. The thing is I would also love to get a 6 in english (right now im at a 5-ish). Is it impossible for a non-native english speaker to achieve a 6 (or very hard)? and does anyone have any tips on how i could improve my englsih? Thaaaank yoouu!

Hi everyone, so I'm doing my written task right now and this is my third one. For the first two I used the Part 2 learning outcome so for this one I have to use Part 1. My teacher said the primary text has to be something related to what we did in class. However I really want to write a blog to compare to football reports, one from a winning side and one from a losing side. I need to somehow connect it to what we have been doing in class to convince my teacher to let me do this. Any advice ? Thank you so much and let's pass IB together

hey everyone so, im panicking a little, because we had our interactive oral in my last german class, and now we're meant to write a reflective statement... but I have no idea how? So i have decided to do a comparitive essay on Lolita and a Clockwork Orange for my extended essay. I did research the two books and saw aspects like the similarity in narration techniques and diction in the two books. I also saw similarities between the protagonists of each book as well as differences between the same. The third spect was as to how the reader feels sympathy for the protagonists despite their criminal nature. However, i am having a tough time in formulating a research question for the same. Any help and other possible points to look at will be greatly appreciated.

For my Language A1 literary essay I'm planning to write about "the humanity of the characters as a key element of success in Hamlet", based only on prince Hamlet. I'd talk about the definition of humanity, the aristocracy as an identification in the greek tragedy and the tragic hero and anti-hero of Aristotle. I'm thinking about fnding a connection between Hamlet and the reader. Because Hamlet is the king´s son, he has a great responsability and has crucial decision to make: to be or not to be, which is pressured by his family and society; the reader might be a teenager that has to make an important decision, such as choosing to go to university or not, and also feels pre…

I just transferred from an AP to an IB school my junior year of high school, so as you can imagine it's been a bit difficult adjusting to the way IB tests. I did my first IOP for my HL English class and I honestly didn't even think I did that bad but I GOT A 4. I got in the 7-8 range for knowledge and understanding of work, but my presentations and language scores were what brought me down. How can I improve to do better next time? I imagined that there'd be more focus on what I talked about in my presentation, but it seemed like the emphasis was on other presentation etiquette stuff????

I am doing my IOP in a month or so, and we have read (and seen) the Great Gatsby as well as The Bell Jar and now we have to prepare an IOP. I really want to discuss the main character in the novel, Esther Greenwood, and her horrible, quite offensive and ablest portrayal in the 1979 movie and compare her characterization to the novel itself. The only problem I have is my teacher not giving me enough feedback. I was initially going to analyse Plath's anti-semitism but I was not allowed to do so and now I am unsure if my topic is good enough. I have a lot of good points already prepared but I still feel as if my topic is not "right". While my teacher is good at what they do,…

Hey, Currently I am half-way into my first IB year. Now, I am seriously considering if I should swap my French B HL course for Arabic A Self-taught: Literature. Why, you may ask? How difficult would a literature (SL) course be without much tutoring, keeping in mind I will get rid of French HL.. Thanks!
