Tips on writing a good Historical Investigation Suggested word count for each section: A. Plan of Investigation: up to 150 words B. Summary of Evidence: 400-500 words C. Evaluation of Sources: 200-350 words D. Analysis: 600 - 800 words E. Conclusion: up to 200 words F. Bibliography: Not counted in the word count. Total word count: 2000 words maximum The above section-by-section word count is a suggested allocation of words only, and it is not necessary to stick strictly to it. However, the bulk of your word count should be in the Summary of Evidence and Analysis. While it is not necessary to choose a title within the syllabus you're studying, it would be useful if you do.…

I realized that the mathematics, physics and some other forums have a "help" topic for questions on that subject. So I decided it would be a good idea to start a similar topic to those for History! There is one problem: history (all of you who take history will understand) doesn't ever have any definite answers, except facts like specific years and names. Therefore, this thread would take a little different form: it would be primarily for helping formulate ideas/arguments, giving facts, etc. I'm History HL with a predicted 6/7 (my teacher refuses to tell me which grade he finally decided on). My prescribed topic is Communism in Crisis. If anyone needs any help, I'm will…

Both in question 3 in Paper 1 and in Section C in the Internal Assessment, you will be asked to evaluate sources for their Origins, Purpose, Values and Limitations. Here are some questions you should be asking yourself when you are faced with a particular type of source:

Paper 1 The purpose of this thread is to introduce you to Paper 1, the Source Paper. Whether you are taking Standard Level or a Higher Level examination makes no difference as, rather unusually, the sources and questions are the same for both examinations. The reason why I'm doing this is that I've came to notice there's a lot of people here in IBS which don't really understand what's required for this paper. There are three Prescribed Subjects assessed in Paper 1: Peacemaking, Peacekeeping – International Relations 1918–36 The Arab-Israeli Conflict 1945–79 Communism in Crisis 1976–8 For each Prescribed Subject there will usually be four written sources an…

Hello IB Survival. My HL History teacher, who has taught IB history for years, created a general markband guide for marking history essays, and I felt I should share it with you all on here. This is by no means the official IB rubric, but rather a "guide" that you should aim for when writing your essays. IB Essay Markbands IB 1, IB 2 You do not understand the question. You do not have an argument. You might include some historical facts, but they are wrong or irrelevant. You do not show that you understand what else is going on at the same time (historical context). You do not talk about different interpretations of the topic. 1-2 Marks: Answers…

Reading, Notetaking and Knowing in History The following information was given to me by my HL History professor who is also an annual IB grader for History and it is also my own advice that I use all of the time fr my History HL class. These are the major tips my professor has given my classmates and I on creating class-notes and study-notes from books, historiography, etc. that are incredibly organized and the methods aim at reaching each type of persons study-style and note-taking style. I hope this is beneficial. It really helped me. Quick Tips to Utilize: Dividing notes Internal (Micro) vs. External (Macro) Capitalizing Arguments/ Marking Arguments in a Specific Way…

Now that I'm done with my History finals (which I've been panicking so much about for the last few months) I'm going to procrastinate by writing some tips on how to do well in IB History while trying not to repeat things that have been said in previous posts on the forum too much. The historical investigation I wrote my historical investigation on Ancient Rome and regret it somewhat, although I did find it interesting. Unless you are very much into history as a subject (and even then), doing your HI on a topic that somewhat interests you and is likely to be of some use in your exams is, I think, the best option. This is simply because having spent so much time on your HI,…

Yesterday, I got my latest history test back. Considering the amount of time I put into studying for it, I expected to do better. I know that I did some really unnecessary mistakes because I was stressed during the test, but the real problem is that I don't really know exactly how I should put together my answers to score on the 20 point questions (those when you have to analyze things from a broader perspective or whatever ). I've come to realize that I spend too much time on learning irrelevant facts that most certainly will not be on the test. Do you guys have any tips on what you should think about while studying history to get the "bigger picture"? Have a nice d…

Could you share the topic of your History IA (and your grade if you already have it) ? This could be helpful for many! Do you have any tips about choosing a topic? I was planning on choosing a topic related to what we've learned in class because it may help me study for the exams. Do you recommend this? Do you recommend a topic related to Ancient History or to Modern History? Too bad nobody answered Well anyways I want to share the process I went when deciding a history topic First I wanted to do something related to witch hunting: ¿What factors caused the young women to be acused of being witches and imprisoned in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 and how was this …

Hey guys, Alright so I do HL History and i abcolutaly LOVE it. However, man there is soooooo much course content involved! Is any one else finding the class one of their most stress full subjects or not? Just wanted to know how everyone is coping and what sort of strategies they use to keep up with everything. Our teacher is forever giving us hand outs and photocopies chapters out of various textbooks and i find it terribly difficult to find the times to summarise it all constanlty. Its crazy -wb -soph x

My teacher basically handed us a list of thirty-two topics, with 2 books/journal articles that offer contrasting views for each topic, and we were to choose one of the 32 topics and use those 2 sources. Purely out of curiosity, I was wondering if this was common practice, or did other teachers do it differently? (:

How to prepare for IB History? 1 2

For someone like me, who hasn't done History in the last two years (I ended up doing Triple Science + Economics for my IGCSE), a part of me worries that I'll be losing out big time if I don't read up on History. I've been told that the IB Humanities courses have been deisgned so that no prior knowledge is required, but I figured that I'd read it out of interest anyway. Is there anyone who went through the same thing as I did? Any suggestions for a pretty much rusty History student? (The last time I did History, I was in Year 8) BTW: I'm doing SL History next year, and I believe we're doing Route 2, but it might change depending on the teacher

Do you guys do a weekly current events thing every week in History, or is it just my class ? I really enjoy Current Events day though, it's great having a huge debate in class and then just laughing at lunch together, i love hearing different point of views, as well. Our biggest debates have revolved around the usual controversial topics like abortion, immigration, the war in iraq, racism, religion, global warming, as well as other topics. and the fun part is that we have some very strong liberals in my class and they totally class with the conservatives.

Hi, As the exams are coming closer and with all the 6 subjects to study for, I really don't have time to review everything. Thus I am trying to think of a short-cut. As I looked through the old exams for history paper 1 communism in crisis, i noticed that in the years that are even (i.e. May 2010 & 2012), students would be tested on China; while for those years that are odd (i.e. May 2011, May 2013), collapse of USSR & Eastern Europe would be tested instead. So assuming that this trend will continue, i think that for this year (May 2014), paper 1 is going to be about China. So my question is: Would it be wise to only study for China or would it be too risky? Thank…

Historians, I am attending History Higher Level and, since I really enjoy History, I have been pissed because I cannot get more than a 5... I hate Paper 1, the questions are so obvious and brief that I don't even know what to say, should I write like a lot and say a lot of bull****? Or should I say the least as possible and write just a few lines? If so, what should I say then? Under what structure? The Paper 2... well, that one I particularly enjoy as I can say what I want and write a much as I want, and embellish it with those speech connectors that every big answer needs to be organized and coherent. Nevertheless, I can only get 5's and I was hoping I could g…

Hello! I'm currently a pre-ib student going into IB this September. I hear that I'm going to have a horrible History SL teacher and I was wondering how this will affect my IB experience. Hello Everyone, First of all, thanks for this forums... they have helped a lot in these past two years of IB. I have finally gotten to the last step, in less than a month I will be sitting my IB exams and thus my revision is getting intense. At the moment, with History, I am feeling lost on how to revise effectively. I bought the Oxford Study Courses guides for Paper 1 and for Paper 2 (the one about single party states). And I have been reading through them highlighting important stuff (whoa its a lot). My problem so far is that I find it almost impossible to remember all the evidence that I would need to write a 5/6 essay. I have no problems structuring the essays, my pr…

As far as i know, the Great Leap Forward was equivalent to the Five-Year plans, except the changes were slower after the devastating effects of the 5YP on Russia. My teacher said that the 100 flowers campaign helped Mao regain power when he was pushed to the 'backbench' or out of memory. But i dont really get what happened or how it does this. If i remember correctly i remember students being sent into the countryside to teach and to smash antique items (i may be getting this confused with the 'cultural revolution'. We covered China, but it's a very confusing topic compared to Hitler's Germany or Stalin's Russia. None of my class are really confident with China. Tony

I've studied a little history under social studies, and didn't do it for my GCSEs. A lot of people have told me History is too much work if I haven't done it as a serious subject prior to IB. I'm still convinced history is my best choice, because I've studied economics and while I enjoyed it, it's not really for me. And a lot of geo seems similar to it. I like the freshness of history and find the course most interesting. So what do I need to know about taking the subject? As a completely ab. initio student.

My first post as a member woo Hope I'm doing this right...Anyway, as the title mentions, I need a little guidance with my History HL course. I've just finished my mocks for my first year of the IB and through all the crammed revision realised the breadth of the subject. Now, as anyone here should know, a lot of well, all history essays require facts, dates and really specific details which leads to my first problem. Lots of people seem to have trouble with the Causes of the Spanish Civil War, so as revision for my exam tomorrow I'm gonna make it simple through a guide, containing all of the essay factors! To start, the political spectrum: Right Wing - Nationalists. Includes Army, Church, landowners, monarchists, CEDA, and Franco's Fascist Party, Falange. Left Wing - Republicans. Includes socialists, communists, anarchists, trade unionists and moderate liberals. The Long-Term causes include Socio-Economic, Army and Church, and political system/factors. These led to a desire for change, which manifests itself in the short term cause of the Second Republic 1931-1936. This led to polaris…

Hi everyone! I'm currently writing my History IA and I noticed that all the good scores (19-25) all present "different perspectives" of their topics. Can anyone define what IB means by different perspectives? Is it like perspectives from historians who are also speculating the subject or different perspectives/factors that affected the subject? Based on what I've seen in past examples, it looks like its perspectives from other historians. My question is: "To what extent did East-West migration lead to the construction of the Berlin Wall?" and the answer is extremely obvious so I don't know what to put in terms of "different perspectives". Hello, I was wondering exactly how difficult is it to achieve a 7, which is what I'm aiming for, in HL History Route 2? I've heard that it's extremely difficult, as about only 2% of the people who take the course achieve a 7. If that's true then shouldn't it be almost impossible, because considering the amount of people who take the course, and out of those only 2 or so percent achieve a 7. If someone could shine some light on this issue that'd be great. Thanks.
