There’s been multitudes of new threads discussing one science vs another. HL vs SL, this vs that, no one knows what science to do because one’s easier than the other, or one has more interesting concepts to you, yada yada. Hopefully this thread will help those who are choosing choose the science they want to do or even need to do and what level they should probably do it on. It’s a long read but if you have a general idea of what you want to do already you can always just skip to those parts I’ll also discuss some of the combos people like to do since I’ve taken all 3 sciences, Chem and Bio at HL too so this should hopefully be rather thorough. Before the descriptions…

I'm not sure about you, but I find doing the uncertainty calculations a giant waste of time. Soo, I quickly coded an application to automate it for you http://timtamshiz.co.cc/ http://ibsurvival.com/uncertainties/ It's pretty straight forward to use, but I'll eventually be modifying it to let you use whole formulas Anyway, enjoy, and if you have any requests for features either PM me or reply here . edit: Oh awesome, it got stuck, thanks to whoever did that. I'll let you guys know when I update it.

So basically, I ended up getting screwed out of contemp this year by our schools AMAZING scheduling abilities....I had an open slot in which they had IB Bio SL and Weight Training (blech) open, so I took bio. I was already in chemistry and physics by choice because I love the two to death and intend on taking them both HL. So far, the only real problem I've run in to is people telling me about how hard chem and phys are. Oh, and also GROUP 4 x 3. It burns, it really does. So, getting back to the point, I'm wondering if any of you chem/phys or even bio HL veterans can give me some advice as to which to take HL. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Help, because I'm a full IB student, I can max take 2 sciences in IB. I really do want my options open considering I'm fairly good at science and have no idea what I want to do in the future.Basically I'll be taking one with Chem HL and probably Math HL and other courses in IB,( don't know if this info helps) and another one either in grade 10 or grade 11 summer school for the 20s. And by grade 12, I have a free block open up for the 30 level course. Anywayz I've learnded a portion of physics 20 in chem, don't know if it counts and a portion of bio in grade 10, so far the only difference I find is that the physics labs' marks r slight lower, but my overall marks r both ar…

So I'm doing course selections and I'm not sure whether I should take SL Bio or Physics. I'm already taking HL Chem and I can only choose one other science. I've asked a lot of people but everyone just says "it depends on what you're going to do". The thing is, I have no clue. I'm considering med school, which would require bio, but it's equally likely I'll go into physical sciences. Here's my reasoning (pros for each): Bio -easier, I could focus on my other HL subjects, and my marks would look better applying to university -more people are taking bio, so there are more people I can discuss/work with; not many of my friends are taking physics Physics -harder, but I think…

Okay so I'm preparing for a giant crapstorm of the likes I've never seen before. I've signed up for 7 subjects against everyone's advice. So I'm basically trying to make everything easier for me on the other side of the spectrum so I don't commit suicide somewhere along the path. I have A*s in all 3 IGCSE sciences. So assuming I'm equally good in ALL THREE sciences, which is the easiest. At Standard Level of course. I am looking at: 1. Difficulty of getting a 7 in course 2. Difficulty and complexity of IAs 3. Amount of practical work and experiments (I freaking suck at those, especially writing them up) 4. Amount of homework that will need to be set/ anticipated to be set…

I need some serious advice. Will i survive if i do chem HL physics SL and French ab? I have never studied French before and I'm worried it might consume alot of my time to scrape a 5/6 for it. I'm a B(70) student in cousework but an A(90+) student in exams as i hate doing work until its due the following day. I'm a consistant and insistant procrastinator which I'll probably have to give up as a habit. Anyone got any advice on whether French ab is easier than indonesian ab? Really appreciate any help.

Just out of curiousity - and preparation... I'm taking both of them at HL, and I was wondering wether those who took them (or know people who did) - both - at HL could tell me the differences in amount of work, how easy/hard is to get a 7, or anyway a top grade. Oooh and if you did your extended essays on them, was it easy of harder compared to others' (in terms of work and effort and grade attained)...?

Soooooo, how about a thread about something that we like What are your favourite topics in the sciences that you do? Make sure you state if you're doing HL/SL. If it's an option, say so Mine are currently: Biology HL: Health and Physiology, Excretion and Genetics Chemistry SL: Periodicity, Acids and Bases. Maybe Organic Chemistry (we just started it)

Hey. I want to study Computer Science in university, as a result, I chose Computer Science and Maths HL (also Physics HL as my third HL). Many people say that CS HL has some very tough concepts and is harder than Maths HL? Is this true, in your opinion? Also, is does taking Maths HL really make your university application more competitive if you apply for CS courses? Thanks! I would really like some comments from people who are currently taking or took IB CS HL.

Well, I just filled out my IB options sheet for next year. Soon I will have to have an interview with our much er 'loved' IB coordinator. Questions: 1) Would you survive doing 3 Sciences? My friend tells me I will be carried to the Mental Hospital if I choose all 3 sciences. 2) Would universities regard doing 3 sciences as a drawback? Any other suggestions would be great! Thanks!!

The IB "strongly reccommends" that the designs be done under exam conditions, so as to avoid copying and similar experiments amongst students from the same group. However, how do you do it at your schools? For chemistry, my teacher allows us to research around the topic and even write out our design, but we have to write the real thing out during class time without any access to notes. I was wondering if any of you are given the topic only on the day or if anyone is allowed to do it at home?

I think I want to take a second science for my sixth subject, but I'm still undecided. I'm already taking HL Biology. At my school, Physics is two years long whether its HL or SL, while Chemistry and Environmental Systems and Societies are just one year and only available SL. I'm leaning towards Chemistry because I'm not sure if I want to take two years of Physics and I think the Environmental Systems class at my school might already be full, but I was wondering if anyone has opinions on which IB science they would recommend. Thanks.

Hi, I was wondering if someone here could tell me how to write a lab report from bio and chem well? I have several formats (ways of writing the lab reports) to follow, but they're different from each other and I'm not sure which pattern I should follow when writing these. So, I was wondering maybe someone here who has experience in this field could help me out? If there's anyone here who knows someone from their school who got a 6 or 7 on their lab reports, could you please tell me what pattern he/she followed? Also, could someone explain how does this grading system for lab reports function (e.g. when writing a Design lab report, is it necessary to write the whole lab …

Currently I am in grade 10 and I have registered for only gr 11/12 CERTIFICATE. I'm asking this question purely because I want to know which one is easier, objectively. I know that in general, if you like a subject, you will be better in it, and you should always choose the one that you enjoy more. However, in my case, I am fairly neutral towards both. While chemistry seems a bit more interesting, that only because the BOOM! and flashy-flashiness of the experiments is fun. The rest of my courses are already pretty heavy (HL Math, HL History, HL English, HL French, and SL Economics) and I have no intention of going into medicine. So, IB Survivors! (or IB strugglers) SL Chem vs SL Bio Which one is easier, in your opinion? Feel free to share personal …

So I have been told that there is no word limit for IAs...but I don't know why, one of my IAs is 5,000 words (the other ones are around 4,000). It is probably not recommendable because it is really time-consuming, but can you actually get penalized? I mean, should I go back and summarize it or get rid of sections?\ Thanks a lot

I do not want to major in anthything related to science in the future. However, I am obliged to take one science. I want to know, Which one is easier, Physics SL or Chemistry SL? In order to recieve a 7 for SL Chemistry, You need 80+(aprox) For Physics, a 7 is 68+(Aprox) Logically, Physics seems easier. What are your opinions? Thank you!

Hi guys, I know this will be unlikely. But does anyone have copies of the new syllabuses for 2016 in Physics and Chemistry, As you all know, the syllabus is going to be changed. The syllabuses were released to teachers in december of 2016, but I want to have a look at their content for some personal reasons. So if anyone has a copy of the syllabuses, please send them to me! You can attach them as files in your replies or send an email to n_______ Thanks.

Hey guys, my SL Chemistry teacher said she won't teach us the options for the exam (since there isn't enough time in the course to learn them), so we can choose whichever two we want to study. I've been looking at the options, and was wondering if there are any specifically that I should avoid because it's too hard to receive full marks for, or any that you have done and found to be to a piece of cake? Thanks. PS: The ones that I'm currently interested in are B) Human biochemistry, D) Medicines & Drugs, E) Environmental Chemistry and F) Food Chemistry.

Hey, I was browsing through the IBO site and looked at group 4 subjects. Since our school only offers the "normal" sciences (Bio, Phys and Chem), I wondered what the others were. Environmental systems is pretty self-explanatory I guess, but I couldn't figure out what Design Technology is. Hello everyone! I started IB this August and one of my HL subjects is Physics. After roughly 3 months of studying, I realized that Physics is not really my thing, I don't really get it and I don't even like it. I sit down to do exercises and it feels easy, then I check the answers and the majority of them are wrong and I don't even know what I am doing wrong... Now to the point, I want to become a docor, but if I want to study in Sweden, where I live, then you need all 3 sciences, so at my school you must take Physics + Chemistry HL and do "extra Biology" beside IB. My plan is to study abroad in the UK or Hungary (my country of origin), but I thought that I can play it "s…

Hello! So basically I will start the IB1 in August, and I am having a hard time deciding for a Group 4 subject to take at HL. Look at my subjects: English A L&L HL Swedish B SL History SL Bilogogy HL Maths. HL Physics SL I have previously taken the preIB abd the IB1 years in a different school, in a different country, but my subjects were literally all different, except for bilogy. I wouldn't say I'm an expert, but I do understand concepts well, and have it rather easy connecting the dots and getting the big picture. But I always have a terrible time in lab practices and even when covering theoretical topics about organs, blood, illnesses! I don't have the guts…

Today, my Biology teacher came up and talked to me and another student about how I labs were exactly the same, other than the name, of course. She went into this big thing about how if they sent it to IBO and the people found this then both of our IB diplomas would be rejected. We also both got zeros. Now, what happened was, this student was confused on the lab and asked to see mine. As you can imagine, that's not exactly what ended up happening with the lab...but I had no knowledge of this. I'm having a difficult time deciding between Biology HL and Chemistry HL. I have the opportunity to take both, both at HL or one at HL and the other at SL. I'm fairly well at Chemistry; it seems simple. However, Biology would probably be better suited for what I plan to study at uni (Psychology with possible intent for grad school). From what I heard, Chemistry is mostly mathematics while Biology is memorization. Is there anyone who could give a full comparison of the two subjects, preferably someone who took both or are in the process in taking both? Thanks.
