Hello everyone. I'm new here, so I am sorry if this is not the place to discuss this topic. I am currently having Physics HL and Chemistry SL and I am looking for work books. I currently checked the IBID Press, Oxford IB and Cambridge IB but I can't decide on which one to buy. I guess they are all similar, but I want to know what you think. Also I prefer to have a book with detailed explanations/solutions for some questions, so that I will have a general idea about how to solve a question. Thank you.

So I have been thinking about applying for IB and I really would like to do it. I want to be a dentist or get into med school after I am done with high school. Currently I am in grade 10 and I have registered for only gr 11/12 CERTIFICATE. I dont want to do diploma because it involves commiting so much..CAS, EE, etc and I would rather focus on doing IB on the subjects I enjoy. I applied for: HL biology HL chem HL pyschology (I can only take 3 or less HL subjects). Right now I'm having a lot of trouble with the courses I chose.. mainly everyone is telling me doing 2 HL sciences is suicide (or something along those lines) but I do enjoy science, I'm just nervous with everyo…

AS of right now, I'm still in a dilemma as to which to pick in University, which is quite far away (2.5 years later). However, I want to start preparing as of now. I am taking Chemistry and Biology HL next year, when IB officially starts and we move from Pre-IB. I was thinking of reading a lot of biology + chemistry related stuff on Wiki, Google, etc. However, I'm not sure what to search for. I have this friend of mine who's really good at biology and chemistry, and he tells me to read more books, but he didn't elaborate on what books to read, so I really don't know how I can prepare myself for next year and university. Does anyone here know what I should look for on the…

Basically, I need help in tweaking an idea I found online into something I can actually experiment... I found this online and it really interested me: http://www.iworx.com/LabExercises/lockedexercises/LockedStretchReceptors-Reflexes-LS2.pdf However, I showed this to my teacher and said that it wouldn't be enough for an IA since it's just demonstrating a simple known fact. I would really enjoy doing an IA in this topic/area so can I have some ideas on what I could do with this?? Thanks!

I am doing my biology laboratory report. Can literature values just be values obtained by a university undergraduate who had done a similar experiment or does it have to be from a journal?

I previously dd an experiment about investigating food, it was measuring the current in lemons, grape fruits, tomatoes and other fruits. howecver HATED it! also my IA really sucked. In the first place i was not convinced, so i want to repeat my food investigation but i cannot find a good experiment about food! anyone have any ideas? that would be great! =D

So, for the Group 4 project, my partners and I are measuring how pH affects the glowing of the bacteria Vibrio fischeri. So, we have the set up, and we know that we want to measure the output of light from our different samples of the bacteria, but I have been at a loss for days as to what instrument would be best to use for measuring the light - and one I can easily get my hands on. Any suggestions? Has anyone tried to do something like this before?

So, I'm newly-registered, but I've skimmed these forums a few times before, and I used to be a member of IB Screwed. I've noticed that a G4 subject that seems to be completely neglected on here, and in general, is Design Technology. It's understandable; I know it's a very uncommon subject, not just in the US, but globally. But, I could use some help with it right now. It's a very simple request; I just need people to take my surveys for my IA (...due tomorrow). We had to do holiday-themed cookie packaging and make an IA on it. The first survey is to establish interest in my product- which would be pizzelle cookies, packaged with a Christmas/Italian theme- and the second i…

do i have to take both Biology HL and Chemistry HL if i want to study medicine? would it be to hard? so maybe i should take chemistry sl? this is what i would take: english hl, biology hl, chemistry hl, history sl,french sl, math sl or english hl, biology hl, history hl, chemistry sl, french sl, math sl also i would have to do a 3/4 year science degree before med school, so maybe it is not necessary to take Biology and Chemistry at HL.??? thanks so much!

Ok, so here it is... basically, we're the first IB batch of the school, which means that everyone in my school is new to the system and all. I just started my second year and I realised that we're behind in many things... one of the things are the science IAs... for chemistry, we've done a couple of practicals and submitted like two lab reports... but i'm sure we have to submit around 6-7... right? we've got like 4 to go... but when i read the assessment criteria and general info on science IAs i read that for HL 60 hours of labwork is required!! whoa!!! As for bio... we've hardly done any IA work! i'm really worried! bio and chem are my HL subjects and im going pale as …

For self-designed labs, does it make a difference if you think of doing something really creative or not? So far in bio I've done two labs that were substantially different than what the rest of the class came up with, but it doesn't seem like that mattered much. So is it even worth it to spend the time coming up with something really original? In the end it just seems like you're marked the same as if you'd created a more obvious experiment. Another question: what kind of grades did you get the first few times you did self-designed labs? We've done three so far, and no one has done very well on any of them - in fact, most people failed the first one. Our teacher qui…

My friends and I had a strange discussion about the so-called "science portfolios" in our schools and had few questions about them. The main one would be though: "Do the 'science portfolios' exist as such that the IBO tells each school to do them?" The reason for us thinking about it was that the 'science portfolios' we have to do in our school does not seem to appear anywhere on web (or at least we can't find information about it easily). Nevertheless, some science teachers in our school base our predicted grades heavily on these and tell us that the 'science portfolios' are part of the Internal Assessment section in the IB. Is it really true? The 'science portfolio' I …

Well I'm going through the 4th week in IB! (yihaa) and I'm writing 4 tests ! Maths Hl Economics HL Chemistry Hl Biology SL I'm not worried about the first and the last because I'm sure I'll get a 7 But the problem is in the other two. Well I'm studying Economics, I've learnt everything by heart, and what I mean by everything is the teacher's notes, the book and the companion. I don't know what else to study! Any ideas of course are welcome! Last but NOT least is my chemistry test. I'm sure I know everything. I've solved 30 exercises that the teacher gave us and also did about 36-40 question from old chemistry past papers. But STILL there is something that I don't reall…

Hello, I'm currently working on my EE and now I came across a problem. When I plot a graph of my data, each dot is a mean of three data values. I wanted to put error bars on it, but I'm not sure what to use. If I used standard deviation, which is in biology syllabus, it can be calculated using 3 values only and I suppose this makes it pointless, doesn't it? On the other hand, I could calculate uncertainties. This would include huge calculations and many formulas. This is fine with me, since I understand all this stuff and it looks sophisticated and actually it is so. So could you give me an advice, which is better to use in biology? Thanks, Dzeb

I'm asking this question purely because I want to know which one is easier, objectively. I know that in general, if you like a subject, you will be better in it, and you should always choose the one that you enjoy more. However, in my case, I am fairly neutral towards both. While chemistry seems a bit more interesting, that only because the BOOM! and flashy-flashiness of the experiments is fun. The rest of my courses are already pretty heavy (HL Math, HL History, HL English, HL French, and SL Economics) and I have no intention of going into medicine. So, IB Survivors! (or IB strugglers) SL Chem vs SL Bio Which one is easier, in your opinion? Feel free to share personal …

I think I want to take a second science for my sixth subject, but I'm still undecided. I'm already taking HL Biology. At my school, Physics is two years long whether its HL or SL, while Chemistry and Environmental Systems and Societies are just one year and only available SL. I'm leaning towards Chemistry because I'm not sure if I want to take two years of Physics and I think the Environmental Systems class at my school might already be full, but I was wondering if anyone has opinions on which IB science they would recommend. Thanks.

I know that passion and interest is a factor in choosing IB courses. However, I love(d) Biology and was a high achiever in it but when it came to this year, the intricate details accompanied by the wide scope was overwhelming. I liked the topic, I just didn't have the time to memorize every single system and function . I like all three sciences but I want to know the courseload so I can make the right choice (I'm taking 2 sciences next year by the way). So I ask: 1. Out of the three sciences (IB Biology, IB Chemistry and IB Physics) which do you think is the most rigorous in terms of courseload? Which did you score higher on? 2. Are there any programs that require Biolo…

The IB "strongly reccommends" that the designs be done under exam conditions, so as to avoid copying and similar experiments amongst students from the same group. However, how do you do it at your schools? For chemistry, my teacher allows us to research around the topic and even write out our design, but we have to write the real thing out during class time without any access to notes. I was wondering if any of you are given the topic only on the day or if anyone is allowed to do it at home?

I was informed of my IA grades yesterday, and my motivation completely died, to be honest. I didn't think I was doing that badly, but I was apparently wrong. Anyway, I'm doing Chemistry SL and my IA score before moderation is 32 points. I guess this could be raised or lowered a point or two, but I don't count on it. As I understand it, this is a weak 6 when converted to the final scale. This disappoints me very much, because I've been aiming for a 7 now that I'm doing it at SL. But I guess this is what I get for trying to do too much in IB1... So my question is whether it is worth to still study ambitiously. Would I have to have perfect scores on every paper in May …

Today, my Biology teacher came up and talked to me and another student about how I labs were exactly the same, other than the name, of course. She went into this big thing about how if they sent it to IBO and the people found this then both of our IB diplomas would be rejected. We also both got zeros. Now, what happened was, this student was confused on the lab and asked to see mine. As you can imagine, that's not exactly what ended up happening with the lab...but I had no knowledge of this. The same student had also asked to see a few other labs, and so I'm planning on seeing which ones I emailed and then informing my Biology teacher about those so that they can be ch…

I need some serious advice. Will i survive if i do chem HL physics SL and French ab? I have never studied French before and I'm worried it might consume alot of my time to scrape a 5/6 for it. I'm a B(70) student in cousework but an A(90+) student in exams as i hate doing work until its due the following day. I'm a consistant and insistant procrastinator which I'll probably have to give up as a habit. Anyone got any advice on whether French ab is easier than indonesian ab? Really appreciate any help.

Have you ever made up data for an IA? I don't mean just randomly making up numbers, what i mean is looking at someone else's and change the numbers. I'm just wondering because i gave my results to someone else to do this and I'm just thinking about how it wouldn't be too obvious.

Since I'm taking both chemistry and biology, I get confused on whether I should treat the uncertainties in the same way. In bio lab reports, should uncertainty be propagated too? Or do we only put uncertainties in tables and graphs? And do we take the smallest division of a lets say the cylinder used? Or one tenth of the smallest division like we do in chemistry?

Hey guys, my SL Chemistry teacher said she won't teach us the options for the exam (since there isn't enough time in the course to learn them), so we can choose whichever two we want to study. I've been looking at the options, and was wondering if there are any specifically that I should avoid because it's too hard to receive full marks for, or any that you have done and found to be to a piece of cake? I have HL bio and Chem. For next year, we have 2 free slots for classes. I have noticed a trend that most of the exams for HL group 4 subjects, overlap the material. Physics material usually is involved on the Chem exam, and some will go as far as to say they couldn't have solved the chem problem without the help of their physics class. My 2 class options: Environmental Science AP or Physics Honors/traditional/AP (not sure what the school will decide to do). I already took physics in pre-IB: and we only touched upon vectors and projectile motion. It was more conceptual, rather than problem solving. Should I even waste my time to go as far as taking onlin…

Ok i am just wondering the significance of a lab for a group 4 science subject because atm, my best mark for my physics lab is: Design- C,C,C, Data Collection- C,P,C Conclusion- P, P, P (=.=;; and i have 1 more and it is the last lab writeup for the year, so i'm wondering if i end up getting Design- C,C,C, Data Collection- C,P,C Conclusion- C,C,C how much of an effect will my P,P,P in conclusion affect my IB mark? oh yea also, how much of a role does a lab play in the final ib mark? For ex, can i have a 5 for my lab and get a 7 on my exam and come out with a 7 overall?
