What am I supposed to write in a lab report when there are huge differences between the measurements in our experiment, virtually making our data meaningless? I mean, we did an experiment where we would see how heating a spring affects its spring constant by measuring the deformation of the spring with a load at room temperature and when the spring is heated. So my hypothesis was that the spring constant would decrease (e.g., it would be easier to pull the spring) with a hot spring. But the problem was that we decided to repeat the experiment, and the results were absurdly different. First we measured a deformation of 10cm, but when we repeated, with the same load, same…

How long had you been in IB when you started to do assessed labs?

Just out of curiousity - and preparation... I'm taking both of them at HL, and I was wondering wether those who took them (or know people who did) - both - at HL could tell me the differences in amount of work, how easy/hard is to get a 7, or anyway a top grade. Oooh and if you did your extended essays on them, was it easy of harder compared to others' (in terms of work and effort and grade attained)...?

Are lab designs for any sciences, required by the IB, ridiculous or not? There is surely no way to be purely original about anything - somehow or another, you would need to use ideas from the web, or books, etc. I think in the next new curriculum, they should destroy this requirement. It's a good practice for us to use our creative brains, but high school isn't about researching! It's about learning - not attempting to make completely original labs from the top of our heads.

Well, my end of years are coming, and its time to start cramming and getting a proper textbook rather then referring off the notes guides. i do both Chem and Physic HL. If i am not wrong theres currently two different books that our teacher encourages us to use. One of them is the books under oxford the 'course companion' one the other one is from the australia. not too sure, but i will get more info on it. Oh, and thanks in advance!

Well, I just filled out my IB options sheet for next year. Soon I will have to have an interview with our much er 'loved' IB coordinator. Questions: 1) Would you survive doing 3 Sciences? My friend tells me I will be carried to the Mental Hospital if I choose all 3 sciences. 2) Would universities regard doing 3 sciences as a drawback? Any other suggestions would be great! Thanks!!

How do you know how many significant figures to use in an example like this: 12.3gO x 1 mol/16.00gO = X There is only one significant figure in the moles (one) so do I use that or do I go by the actual numbers? Thanks!

Hey, I'm just wondering, do the IB penalise you for flooding them with information, and also, if your practical is aimed at finding out something which isn't the dependent variable, does your research question talk about the dependent variable, what you are trying to find, or both. Also, are any people (e.g. IB graduates) willing to mark/comment on people's work?

Today we had a planning lab in Biology on enzymes and how they are affected by temperature changes. Took 3 hours to do, the teacher helped everyone out and we all followed the method to the letter. Yet none of our results fit the hypothesis that we all knew to be true (i.e. enzymes above 40 degrees are denatured and don't break starch down, same thing for enzymes at 0 degrees). Seeing as we were all pissed off at having wasted 3 hours for nothing, and there having been no real reason for the failure (the controls worked when we tested them before starting and the amylase was fresh, out teacher even prepared it twice for us), our teacher gave us free rein to forge our r…

Okay people, there are a lot of useful links on the net which help us revise almost every single subject...but the biology ones must be updated since the Syllabi changed last year. Our teacher teaches us the subject by giving us notes going by the Syllabus, so I thought it would be useful if I shared them with you...feel free (what's more, I obligue you) to comment on the notes, add, or substract any material. I don't trust my bio teacher that much, so please correct them where you feel correction is needed. I have made a domain in geocities, and most probably will put up the revised notes on it, so that everyone can access to them and study. I hope this works out!!! …

Okay, so I need help deciding which class to take in conjuction with IB Physics next year: IB Bio or IB Chem. I love all types of science, so this is a hard decision for me, but I have to make it soon considering school is starting in 3 weeks. I have an interest in both bio and chem, so here is some more info on my background. Last year in science research, I conducted a project correlating ionospheric waves patterns to weather disturbances. I recentley attended a biotechnology summer camp, and conduccted research relating to the genetic link to autism. I am currently interested in furthering my research in autism. In school, I have take both honors bio and honors chem. …

So I have my first IA's for Chemistry and Bio coming.. I wanted to know what happens when you have 2 HL sciences..I have Chemistry and Biology. Considering the group 4 subjects are done the same, what am I suppose to do? Are the topics pre-determined? What are some general And specific tips you could give me for my IA? Thank you so much. I am new and I love the hospitality of this website. All help appreciated!

Currently doing pracs that our teachers propose we submit to IBO, although they seem really simple to me - we did everything (D,DCP & CE) however the design seemed frigtheningly obvious for both, so just checking whether these topics and my subsequent research questions would be acceptable to submit to the IBO: PHYSICS Factors affecting resistance in a wire. - What affect does length of nichrome wire have on the resistance of this ohmic conductor in a closed circuit? CHEMISTRY Factors affecting rate of reaction - What affect does the concentration of sodium thiosulfate have on the rate of the reaction between aqueous sodium thiosulfate and aqueous hydrochl…

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me how Physics SL is different to doing Physics HL. Obviouly HL is a lot harder, but how much harder? How much more effort does Physics HL need in comparison to SL? What are the benefits of doing Physics HL than doing SL? I want to do Physics next year but I'm not sure which level to chose. I usuall get 6's in Physics with a 7 popping up every known and then. Thanks!

Is there a way to predict your IB grade (1-7) from your current grades? Let's say I have been getting 70% uncurved on my biology tests, which are made from old IB exams and graded using the markschemes, what 1-7 grade does that translate too? Is there a way to put IA in aswell? BAZ

My teacher got us to do our first lab, which also happens to be a formal lab, and the requested us to do % error for our tables. I understand how to do them but what I do not understand is if I'm suppose to do it for every single measurement I did, I probably should have done this during class but I didn't cross my mind until now and I was busy collecting my data I'm doing a lab on the Ideal Curves of Phase Change of a Pure Substance (Ice/Water) I think I'm suppose to calculate all of the different temperatures I had and then add the % up. Like if I had -1,0,1,2 °C I just calculate those % error then add then I have the error for table right? Thanks

so im starting per-IB this may but i need to turn it the course choice form next monday. what i'm planning to take is: English A2 HL Indonesian A1 SL Mathematics SL Business HL Biology Chemistry i'm wondering if it's better to take Biology of Chemistry HL? or both? I'm not really a math person but currently i have the highest Chemistry grade in my class. I'm pretty good at memorizing but i only got a 6 in Biology this year. Is taking both at HL a big difference and how's the workload? I need to mention that i'm not that study all the time type of person even though so far i'm getting 6 and 7s on my subjects this year. If taking both at HL then that means that i'm taking …

So basically, I ended up getting screwed out of contemp this year by our schools AMAZING scheduling abilities....I had an open slot in which they had IB Bio SL and Weight Training (blech) open, so I took bio. I was already in chemistry and physics by choice because I love the two to death and intend on taking them both HL. So far, the only real problem I've run in to is people telling me about how hard chem and phys are. Oh, and also GROUP 4 x 3. It burns, it really does. So, getting back to the point, I'm wondering if any of you chem/phys or even bio HL veterans can give me some advice as to which to take HL. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey all! I just wanted to clarify something that, even now (just started 2nd year of IB), our group 4 teachers haven't explained very well. Supposedly, according to some snippet of info that someone leaked from the teachers , we are supposed to keep a log book with a record of all the practical time we do and that we're meant to have at least 60 hours of prac time per subject. Is that true, and to what extent? Or is someone just trying to scare the pants off us? Much appreciated, coz if it is the case, I should probably start making some logs up jokes

Planning labs have torn and crushed my soul. I've done 2 planning labs for Bio HL and 1 planning lab for Chem SL yet so far, I've not yet achieved over a 1/3 T___T Does anyone have any advice for what is looked for specifically. I mean, are there really more safety precautions besides "washed hands" and "put on goggles" And if you don't have any advice, then tell me of your suffering or achievements with planning labs

Could someone who took/is taking design technology post their major design project here for an example. I won't take your topic (I'm almost done with mine, anyways). I just want an example of the set up, what you put in each section, how in-depth you went, etc. Thankz.

Hey, I was browsing through the IBO site and looked at group 4 subjects. Since our school only offers the "normal" sciences (Bio, Phys and Chem), I wondered what the others were. Environmental systems is pretty self-explanatory I guess, but I couldn't figure out what Design Technology is. So if anyone here happens to take it, could he/she briefly explain what the subject is about?
